Once the wins start piling up, recruiting will be fine. Remember Kerwin Bell was a walk on, along with lots of other great Gators. Stars don't determine greatness, coaching the players that want to be great does, no matter how many stars they earn in high school.

Stars really didn't matter 35 years ago.

My point exactly, if they didn't matter 35 years ago, why do they matter now? Get the best players you can, that fit in your program, coach them up and win football games. Same today as 100 years ago. The star system is all about egos and pumping your chest about how good you can recruit. This system is contributing to kids being self centered, me, me, me per-madonas.

35 years ago, there was no reliable rating system. There were fewer camps. Fewer showcase events. No websites covering recruiting.

Dan will get the best players he can, as you say. But you won't like it because it won't be the best players available. And that will show up in the 4th quarter of games.

Bingo. And don’t forget the larger exposure tool: social media.

I would trust his judgement if I were a UF fan. He's going to get recruits. They may not be the on top of the 247 ratings but they'll be fits for his team. He can evaluate talent.

Some of those guys atop the 247 board aren't any good anyway.

The very nature of recruiting is telling a kid how good he is and how much you want him on your team. The system only provides tools to enhance that.

As for Mullen and the stars vs. diamonds in the rough argument, I used to sound just like you. Five years ago, I said the same stuff. Five years from now, you'll be sounding like me. Mullen is a poor recruiter, and he is surrounded by poor recruiters, and it will lead to significant lack of depth in key position groups. His philosophy was fine at Mississippi State, but it won't last at Florida with him recruiting in the same back yard as Richt, Smart, Taggart, Kiffin, etc. It could get ugly fast. Hell, it already is.

He's a weird frick for sure. There's a reason it took him so long to get out of Starkville.

Of course he said that, however if you look at the evidence, the majority of the guys we’ve had visit and on our board are blue chips. He just keeps missing them, rather than admit the truth, that he sucks at recruiting he would rather just act like they don’t matter. This should surprise nobody, because Mullen is full of shite with just about everything that comes out of his arrogant mouth.

Boise State begs to differ. You remember what Petersen did with them, right? It takes a good HC finding talent that fits his system. Boise State kicked a lot of arse with 2* and 3* players.

Because you don't win a national championship and, in the SEC, you don't win a conference championship, without a roster of at the very least Top 10 star-metric talent. Those are just facts.

Can Mullen win go 10-3 and even sprinkle in some 11-2 seasons with a foster full of #18-25 team recruiting ranking teams? Sure. And if that is ok with you, then you should be happy. But don't trick yourself into thinking he can take a #18-25 recruiting class and win a national title or probably even a SEC title. He can't.

The coach of the team you claim to pull for hasn't coached a single game yet and this is the crap you have to say, NegaGators,

What do you think his record would have been had he played a SEC schedule and not a WAC one? Anyone can play way above there level once or twice a year, the SEC is an every week grind.

“I look at it this way: Tim Tebow was on everybody’s list. Dak Prescott wasn’t, and both were very successful quarterbacks,” @CoachDanMullen told me
Well guess what

Tebow was surrounded by other 5 stars and won 2 national titles and 2 sec titles

Dak was surrounded by more "program fits" and won jack shite

Boise was a rare exception built around older kids and guys other schools could not take. They built there oline from older Mormon kids that had been on missions.

Even so, Peterson is gone.

Exactly - the idea that he is going to say "I mean look at what we did at State with Dak we'll do that here too"...........................good luck with that.
