The College Football Playoff committee unanimously revised the qualifying criteria for the 12-team event Tuesday. The 5+7 format is here.
It’ll be the five highest ranked conference champions plus the next seven highest ranked teams as determined by the CFP committee. It was all made official Tuesday after meetings.
“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” said Dr. Mark Keenum, President of Mississippi State University and Chair of the CFP Board of Managers. “I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason.”
Under this change, there are modifications from the original 12-team plan. That called for the six highest ranked conference champions, plus the next six highest ranked teams.

Definitely.
American, Mountain West and Sun Belt have a leg up and will have the best opportunity year to year.
Conference USA and MAC are well behind with the exception of Liberty.
Basically, the champions of the SEC, B1G, ACC and Big 12 are going to be guaranteed byes every year.

Good.
I realize this is in response to conferences failing, but the idea of an AQ only serves to "spread the wealth" to teams and their leagues who never probably deserved to be there in the first place.
In other words, the lowest AQ probably removes a decent SEC team and shoehorns in the Cinderella-flavor-of-the-month almost every time.
ETA: It's fun in a 68-team basketball tournament when some underappreciated guys at a mid-major get hot and make it out of the first weekend.
In D1 football, there ain't no way in hell that James Madison is squeaking past Georgia and Ohio State.

A slight difference under this format to what we saw floated at the end of last year.
Byes
1. Michigan
2. Texas
3. Alabama
4. Florida State
First Round
23. Liberty at 2. Washington
11. Ole Miss at 6. Georgia*
10. Penn State at 7. Ohio State*
9. Missouri at 8. Oregon
*- Ole Miss and Penn State are likely switched to avoid rematches.

True. I think they should do only the top 4 conference championship qualifiers. Even so, I'd imagine there will be at least 7-8 teams total yearly from the SEC and Big 10.

Do they reseed after the first round? If not, the 5 seed kind of gets shafted right? They play the 12 seed then have to play the 1 seed if they win?

Should just be the top 12 teams regardless.

The Big 12 is barely hanging on and the ACC won't exist very soon.
It should be 2 autos and 10 wildcards, but that means like 6 SEC teams will get in and we can't have that. So here we are.

I think it is very possible for the 5 highest-ranked "conference champs" to not include either of those conferences. This is as good of a scenario as the "Group of 5" teams could ever have hoped for.

Let's just take the top 12 from the Big 10 and SEC and go at it.
I think that's where we are headed ultimately anyway.

Should be 5+6+1
The +1 should be a lottery pull from all remaining teams.
0-16 Temple … You’re in.

I can't wait for a 18th ranked Oregon St. PAC12 Champ to be in

Doubt the #6 team in SEC standings could hang with either the Big 12 or the ACC champ. That's absurd.

I understand the PAC2 is still officially a conference, but this should have been hashed out long before now.

Will the teams getting bye get to host or will these games be part of the bowl system?

They would have a far better shot than #22 Old Dominion would.

Are we sure?
If a 9-3 Arkansas team upsets a 12-0 Tennessee team in the SECCG, would Arkansas get a bye? I think the seedings are separate from the who is in discussion. Tennessee might still get a top 4 seed, and Arkansas land somewhere around 7-9.

I agree with that.
