These are games in which both teams where ranked going in.

Obviously this only goes back to 1936

Times met where both teams where ranked in the AP Top 25

Alabama vs LSU: 27 times
Florida vs Tennessee: 24 times
Florida vs LSU: 23 times
Alabama vs Auburn: 22 times
Alabama vs Tennessee: 21 times
Auburn vs Georgia: 21 times

Now lets see things since 1992

Florida vs Tennessee: 19 times
Florida vs LSU: 18 times
Alabama vs LSU: 15 times
Auburn vs LSU: 13 times
Alabama vs Florida: 13 times
Georgia vs Tennessee: 13 times

Now, for fun, since the latest expansion: 2012

Alabama vs LSU: 6 times
Alabama vs Texas A&M: 5 times
Florida vs LSU: 4 times
Auburn vs Georgia: 4 times
and.... a lot more tied at 4

--I was honestly expecting to see Alabama vs Tennessee at the top of this list before I started looking. Somewhat surprised to see that not only is it not at the top, it barely makes the top 5.

I bet you can't wait for football to start so you can start brainstorming more offseason thread ideas.

It’s three games away from second place over the last 82 years

sean reminds me of Wally Holland, broadcast announcer for the Twins in Little Big League. Some Wally gems:

1) Last year though, he was sixth in the American League in hitting right-handers he was facing for the first time...after the seventh inning...at home!

2) An interesting side note: that's the 14th one-run game for the Tigers already this season, tops for any team north of the Mason-Dixon Line, whose home games are not played in a dome.

3) Lou, by the way, has hit .416 lifetime versus Hanley in the month of September in even years, so that certainly bodes well for this at-bat

and it'll only get worse as Tennessee continues its descent into the bottom tier of the SEC East.

This really surprises me:

Alabama vs LSU: 27 times

whereas:

Alabama vs Tennessee: 21 times

Alabama vs Auburn: 22 times

I realize the Iron Bowl wasn't played from 1908 to 1947. LSU and Bama didn't play from 1931 to 1943 and also didn't play in 1949, 1950, 1956 and again from 1959 to 1965.

But no denying Auburn has the better record as both rivalries have the same number of contests (82) but Auburn has 11 more wins over Bama than LSU does.

Do you cut grass or wash windows?

Also, I'm with you ... that surprises me about the UTk vs Bama series. Almost makes us feel as if we've been duped into thinking tsio is a big deal.

Seems like there should be no further discussion about keeping that a regular interdivisional permanent series so we should feel free to make schedule adjustments and swap division members accordingly.

Let Auburn come to the East, send Mizzou to the West. Make Auburn vs Bama each other's permanent interdivisional game and be done with it.

If you look at the UTk vs Bama thing ... it's just not that big of a deal anymore and, honestly, it's only UTk fans who are clinging to it so desperately.

Other East teams deserve more shots at the champs. If we take a moment and look at it that way then UTk is really being selfish. Not only that but they're not really holding-up their end of the bargin by giving Bama a competitive game ... and they really haven't this millennium for the most part.

Let's give some other teams in the East a shot at the champs. That's the American way.

Here's another way to look at it.

If we were talking Heavyweight Championships the way this tsio thing has been pawned off on the conference ... Muhammed Ali would have fought Carmine Acevedo three times over the years instead of Smokin' Joe Fraizier. What a travesty that would have been giving Carmine all those shots at the champ instead of Smokin' Joe.

Anyone remember Carmine The Ace Acevedo? Nah, I thought not. And that's pretty much what UTk is anymore.

Let's allow some real challengers from the East like UGA, SC and UF have some cracks at the champ during the regular season for a change.

Let's start a new trend ... #NoMoTSIO!

Easily the 3 biggest conference games on LSU's schedule most years since 1992 so not a big surprise.

Alabama vs Texas A&M: 5 times

The only non Big Six matchup on this list.
But Aggy hasn't finished the season ranked since 2013. We shall see what Jimbo does for them.

Pretty big talk from a fan of a team who has won absolutely nothing.

Rankings matter little in a true rivalry.

That's part of what makes rivalries so much fun.

David can knock off Goliath and have an entire year to crow about it.

Surely a South Carolina fan understands what I'm talking about.

Time of year when teams play also affects rankings. Some rankings are earned, others at times early in the season are given by name recognition.

Friend and I were just discussing. Florida/LSU and Florida/Tennessee are on there but no Florida/UGA which is one of the SECs premier rivalries (duh). I think a few factors are obviously UF wasn't elite until the 90s but also the WLOCP isn't played until either the last month of the season or the last weekend in october whereas Florida plays both Tennessee and LSU very early in the season when they're most likely to still hold a preseason ranking. So you're right, opponents that are faced earlier in the season are more likely to have more ranked matchups at gametime especially if it's a premier brand.

Most definitely.

Iron Bowl is last weekend of November.
LSU/Bama has been mostly played in early to mid November going back to the 1960s.

They seem to go in cycles...when one program is up, the other is typically down.

Auburn won 7 times before the series ended in the early 1900's. The series restarted in 1948, so Auburn missed playing Alabama for almost 40+ years and missed some very good Alabama football decades. LSU,on the other hand, started playing Alabama after Alabama had become a national name......

Rankings always matter in rivalries. It's part of the dynamic ... it's part of the motivation.

Regardless of the rivalry, nine times out of ten the best team still wins. That's just a fact.

Show me otherwise and I'll give cudos to you.

Now, do upsets happen in rivalry games? Sure they do but not often, very rarely.
