Worst SI cover EVER. Still they can not explain how a package weighs two different weights and conveniently opens up without "opening" it up.

LSU's loss to Cal was not bad. Cal had a guy named Jason Kidd, you may have heard of him. He hit a last second shot to win the game.
LSU's loss to Dayton in 1984 was the worst. LSU also lost to Navy, but they had a guy named David Robinson, you may have heard of him too.

Oh that guy that did Nike commercials led the NBA in scoring and dropped 50 on Michigan in NCAAT as a Sr in first round loss? That guy?

Cal? With Jason Kidd? In an 8-9 game? Seriously?

How about getting blown the frick out by Purdue in 2003? Losing in the first round to Dayton in 1984? UTEP spanking us in 1989? UAB in 2005?

Bucknell is always a legit tournament team when they get in. Memphis St. with Penny and David Vaughn wasn't an embarrasment either.

I'll go with Louisville and Pervis Ellison, wasn't supposed to have a prayer to hang with them but we did, should have got the upset and got a title a year or two earlier.

I love how people defend Bucknell. It was in Dallas, it was supposed to be the start of a resurgence, and it got Heath fired. But no it wasn't embarrassing, because it was Heath I guess.

As for Memphis St it was second loss to them, this time Day was playing and it was in Tourney not in Memphis. That 92 was supposed to make another deep run like the previous 2 had. In fact, the corp had just come from FF and EE, so guess losing to freshman wasn't embarrassing.

The year they lost to Louisville was 89? With Howell, Credit, Mayberry, Day, Wilson, Huery, etc?

UTEP wasn't an embarrassment, looking back. Nobody knew who they were, but it turned out they had a pretty damn good player- Tim Hardaway.

Dayton was bad, UAB was maybe worse. Believe it or not, UConn (against Shaq's team) was probably as bad as any; the Huskies are now considered a power, but we were supposed to roll them.

Memphis State was tough to swallow, but they had Penny Hardaway, so I wouldn't call it an embarrasment.

You must be as old as me to call them Memphis State. Didn't they have Elliot Perry in that game as well? Was Larry whatshisname still coaching Memphis State then?

No it didn't get Heath fired. He was back the following year for much more of the same with another first round exit from the tourney this time with a loss to Southern Cal.

It would have to be, for the Gamecocks, their #2 seed loss to Richmond or their #3 seed loss to - hell, I put it out of my mind to ease the pain. I forget who. I think it was back to back years in the 90s under Eddie Fogler.

Hell, if only Kevin Garnet and Jermaine O'Neal had not left early to go to the pros we would have won the National Championship that #2 seed year ... crap. This thread drug-up some bad memories.

Elliot Perry was gone. Larry Finch hadn't been caught cheating a second time yet. Dana Kirk, Larry Finch, Cal all tried to outcheat every team.

The best Memphis team that wasn't bought may have been none, as they were all bought.

Finch.

Question is are you old enough to remember the UCLA - Memphis State final in 1973? Lot's of good story lines, what with the Bill Walton peak performance and the Gene Bartow/John Wooden matchup. It's the first NCAA final I remember watching...

Wasn't Bartow put at Memphis St by Wooden? And Crumb went to Louisville to prove he deserved the UCLA job over Bartow when it opened?

Don't know about that, just knew that Bartow succeeded Wooden when he retired a couple of years later. And completely wilted under the pressure of doing so...

ETA: Looks like Crum left for Louisville in 1971 to prepare to succeed Wooden, thinking he couldn't do so without head coaching experience...

Our last NCAAT loss was to Syracuse the year they won it all. We haven't been back since, so I really can't remember anything earlier than that.

So sad.

My vote as well.

UAB as the 11 seed in that game made us look like a high school team. We couldn't break the press to save our arse. By far the most embarrassing.

The Purdue loss was bad, but that was an 8/9 matchup and those are always tossups

I've hated Boise State ever since that game. Seeing their logo always makes me think of that game.

And yeah the Pudue loss was embarrassing but it was just good to see them in the tourney again ( I think it was our first appearance since the 2000 Sweet 16 team). UAB flat-out dominated us from the tip.

Tennessee's is easy since I was there in Charlotte. SMS beat UT by 30 in 2nd rd and Greene was fired day later.

Green was not fired for 2 more years. He was fired after losing to Charlotte in the first round of the AAs in 2001.

Pearl's final game as Tennessee' head coach was pretty bad as well. 75-45 loss to Michigan in the 8/9 game in Charlotte in 2011.

Right, Larry Finch actually played on that '73 team if I remember correctly. Why does Rambus (sp) come to mind also? I dunno. And Wes Westfall? Hell, names I have not thought of in years.

Anyways, yes, I was a freshman at Carolina in '73 so I remember that NCAA final well. We were in the same Midwest regional (South Carolina and our coach Frank McGuire) with our future Metro Conference cousins Memphis State, but we lost to SWLA by five if I remember correctly in a really high scoring game for the time.
