I always knew Vandy to be the "Harvard of the South." No one has ever called Ole Miss that with a straight face, right? RIGHT?

Folks in MS do refer to OM as the "Harvard of the South" which cracks me up. Even their out of state students laugh at that. Plus, OM likes to give off a UVA type of attitude which can drive other SEC fans crazy.

I believe they sell "Harvard of the South" T-shirts at the Ole Miss student bookstore.

"Academic improvement" does not occur in the course of one year.

Good to know I could have bought the same inflated self worth I now possess for significantly cheaper.

Oh, yes they have. Over the years I've had many OM students and graduates tell me this, and they were serious as a heart attack. Of course, I openly laughed in their face. That's why that ranking is so funny. They always call us a hick, redneck school and we're ranked above them in academics.

I'm more interested in SEC Law Schools. U.S. News 2014 rankings:
#16 Vanderbilt
#23 Alabama
#29 Georgia
#49 Florida
#58 Kentucky
#61 Arkansas
#64 Missouri
#72 LSU
#72 Tennessee
#93 USCe
#104 Mississippi
Georgia Law ranks 7th (highest in the SEC) in placing grads in judicial clerkships.
Number of U.S. Supreme Court Clerkships between 2000 and 2010:
Georgia Law 4
Vanderbilt 2
Missouri 1

The biggest problem is peer reviews.
That's why all the UC satellite campuses (UC Davis, UC Irvine, etc.) are all so overrated, because they all review each other as if they're all Berkely.
Well that and the University of California is probably the best public university system in the world.
Only Riverside is questionable and Merced is less than 20 years old. The rest are excellent.

The other thing is private schools have gotten better and better at gaming the system for a better US News rating because for them it actually matters. They pay incoming Freshman at Baylor to re-take their SAT's to improve their scores after they have already enrolled for instance. They also aren't nearly as accountable as public schools as to the accuracy of their data and US News has to rely on self reporting.
I just laugh when I see how A&M has dropped the last couple of years. Our endowment has exploded and now surpassed Michigan as the #2 among all Public Universities. We have the largest research spend of any University for over 1000 miles in every direction. We consistently rank at the top for starting salaries and recruiting lists. Our profile is bigger than ever. Yet we are dropping?
To show you how ridiculous the private school bend is for US News now the highest rated Public school has dropped to #20 for Cal Berkeley. They have now put SMU at #60 ahead of A&M which is beyond laughable. They put more and more Non AAU private schools at higher rankings which is just a joke.

Yeah, I really liked UGA law and the fact you could live in Athens. I would have definitely gone there if I thought I could have gotten a job outside of Atlanta (where I was sure I didn't want to live). The problem with highly ranked state law schools without the reputation of a UVA or a Michigan is that employers outside the state are often unaware of how good they are.

That is about all they place their students in.

Using a private school's lack of an AAU membership against it is kind of ridiculous. Many simply aren't research schools.

I've never considered the UNWR rankings to be the bible of school rankings. Factors tend to favor "touchy feely" liberal arts schools. Plus, once you get past the top 50 schools, I'm not sure the rankings really matter. Do employers care if you went to a 72nd ranked school vs. a 104 ranked school?

Strictly speaking, liberal arts schools have their own set if USNWR rankings independent of "universities." But I see where you're coming from.

We had recruiters from firms up and down the east coast. A good number of Georgia Law students are not from Georgia, myself included. We take the reputation of the university back home with and employers/firms notice. I worked back home in DC after graduation, although I eventually made it back to Atlanta.

This is true because of the student::professor ratio component.
I can see arguments for both sides here. On one hand, some students might benefit from more personal attention from the professor. On the other hand, big universities tend to attract the top professors (especially in STEM fields), so the course content is probably better in those environments but USNWR doesn't necessarily measure that.
