Somehow he made it through 4 years of college football with his teammates knowing he was gay without raping any of them in the showers or spreading AIDS to them... so I guess those concerns are null and void.

Yeah, giving him his own shower will really bring a rookie into the fold and make him feel like a part of the team. Terrible idea. There are inherent complications that are going to occur in that hyper-macho environment.
The hazing rituals ought to be a blast for Sam, too.
I just don't see how this is going to work. Whether it's "right" or not is another argument. Maybe one day it will be more widely accepted, but for now, like the NFL scout that was quoted - I just don't think the NFL is ready.
The vast majority of NFL players haven't had to develop more social tolerances because, much like their educations, they haven't had to worry about it. In their world, it's not a priority.
