Blame fat Leonard Fournette for starting this trend. Guy stunk against Bama, then quit on his team, and was awarded for it by being a top 5 selection.
He and Christian McCaffrey were the first two I can remember doing it.

I mean metchie did cost himself millions with that injury
That was SEC CG not a random bowl game though. He was never going to opt out of that.
Also I’m not sure if Metchie actually declares. He seemed to be looked at as a 2nd round pick at best even before the injury. Now with the injury there’s uncertainty regarding his future recovery of course. As well as him not being able to participate in any drills in the combine or pro day. Plus Bryce is coming back next year so it would make sense for him to rehab and return for one more year.

Jaylon Smith, ND - doesn’t matter how many else there are. A lot of people saw that injury in the meaningless Fiesta Bowl against OSU and saw him drop from a consensus Top 5 to 34th pick. Estimated loss based on other Top 5 draftee contracts was around $20 million
Same thing happened the following year to Michigan TE Jake Butt who was projected to be a Day 2 pick but fell to the the fifth round.
And Jerry Jeudy had a 200 yard game in the bowl and probably increased his value.
That's what Saban has managed to get his players to buy into: you don't increase your value by sitting on the couch.

He's just leaning into the 3* thing now.

When they start signing nil deals than those companies representing them should make them refund all money
That's pretty fricking stupid. That's the whole point of NIL...they're paying for the player's endorsement. Why does the company care if the team wins or loses if they're still profiting off the player's endorsememt?
Should Brian Kelly have to refund all his endorsement money from this season because he opted out?

And thats probably true in a lot of cases for Bama guys. They have excellent coaches. A lot of the guys that sit out dont. And are playing in meaningless games.
Its not about increasing your value. Its about protecting the value thats there.

Then separate them into teams. One for amateurs and the other for potential high draft picks. Or better just declare right out of high school and not waste time pretending to be a student athlete.

I haven't always liked it when Leach is publicly critical of his players. But this is spot on. Spot fricking on.
Someone really think they're cut out for the NFL if they can't handle an extra college bowl game? Especially a low-caliber on like the Liberty Bowl? Very selfish action. These players are loaded with scholarship money and pampered to the fullest extent by these schools. They should be playing every game possible.

Dont think you would like the quality of the product then.

True but if I recall there were at least a few starters that elected not to play when Alabama was in the non-playoff Citrus Bowl two years ago against Michigan

Trevon Diggs and Terrell Lewis, both defensive players, were the only ones who opted out of the Citrus Bowl. Truth be told neither one of them opting out affected me in a negative way considering the injuries as well as the fact our defense hadn't been stopping anyone at all that season.

Odd how Mike Leach supports Milton Friedman’s free market capitalism, but then complains when a player follows the principles of free market capitalism.
College football is big business. The players are only playing the same capitalism game that everyone else is. More power to them.

Mike Leach can say what he feels all day long but bowl season will never do for the players what the NFL combine will. Show out there and up the food chain you go. Much like a football head coach they are chasing the contract.

Coach Leach is correct. Quitting on your teammates is as selfish as it gets
While I agree with him, so are coaches who leave for the big bucks before their bowl game.

Spot on from Leach, TBH. I don't like people leaving their teams before the season is done.

Nonsense. Players bodies are their investment and it has a limited lifespan. If they feel they’re ready for the league, bailing on the bowl and letting a younger player get reps is fine. Also, so it’s ok for coaches to bail on their program before the year ends but not for players? Finally, funny to hear judgement from a coach who has a history of controversies surrounding player treatment.

Lol. Coaches are such hypocrites it’s unbelievable.
