re: Mike Leach: It's selfish for players to opt out of bowl games

True but if I recall there were at least a few starters that elected not to play when Alabama was in the non-playoff Citrus Bowl two years ago against Michigan

Jaylon Smith, ND - doesn’t matter how many else there are. A lot of people saw that injury in the meaningless Fiesta Bowl against OSU and saw him drop from a consensus Top 5 to 34th pick. Estimated loss based on other Top 5 draftee contracts was around $20 million
Same thing happened the following year to Michigan TE Jake Butt who was projected to be a Day 2 pick but fell to the the fifth round.

re: Nice clip from ND OC Tommy Rees on BK’s exit

Rees had the opportunity to join Kelly, for significantly more money, and turned him down.
That’s been one of Kelly’s weaknesses - building out a staff with people he knows instead of the best available. His last three defensive coordinators (Elko, Lea, Freeman) were basically forced on him by ND’s AD after Diaco and Van Gorder turned out to be busts. Those three accounted for renewed energy around defensive recruiting the last few years.
I’m not saying CBK can’t learn from his mistakes and create a great staff moving forward. But it is interesting one of his early choices for OC was a 29-yr old instead of looking for whoever was best available.

First post on TD…unfortunately he was coach during a cheating scandal in which 2 players had a trainer doing work for them and six players total were found to have received improper benefits by the NCAA. ND had to vacate all its wins from 2012 and 2013 because those players played. ND is also currently on probation for recruiting violations.
