It is things like this that make me ashamed of my own country. How can a major University discriminate against African Americans? How come some still defend this? All names in this article should have their names erased from all facilities.

Darrell was always a racist. When his daughter married a Hispanic man, he was making racist jokes about it with his buddies on the golf courses.
I am an old guy. Over the years, knowing players who played at both texas and aTm, knowing some of the "in guys" happens. I was personally never "in" or close to it. Just over time, was in positions to meet those who were. A person I know was playing golf with him, while he was doing it and taken aghast. What bothers me is my friend didn't have the balls to tell him he was wrong. Took the "friendship" as more important than being right.
If that wads some people up, so be it.

Welp, there’s gonna be a fountain and two stadiums renamed.

To my Oklahoma friend. If I was an Okie I wouldn't go there either.
In 1965 I was stationed at Tinker AFB in the Oklahoma City suburb of Midwest City, OK.
I lived in the barracks with a guy who had just arrived from Japan. He and I worked together. He said he would not be here very long because he was being forced to be reassigned. It seems that he was black and his wife was Japanese. While the Air Force was integrated, Oklahoma was not ready for a married black and oriental to live together. He was an E-4 and while there was base housing, he was too low in rank to live there. After two months he was reassigned to a base in Illinois so he could live with his wife.
All of this to say this. In the 1960's Oklahoma was not so squeaky clean either. Those were difficult times for our country but that stuff no longer happens.

Williams and his roommate J.T. Reynolds joined the football team shortly after he came back to campus. The two would go on to become the first Black football players and lettermen at Texas A&M in 1967 and 1968. For Williams, this wasn’t his first attempt to play on the field.
Years earlier he had suited up for freshman practice, only to be told by head coach Hank Foldberg that Texas A&M would not be playing ****** on its football teams. Even after surviving a difficult conditioning process, Williams and Reynolds never traveled and only played sparingly in home games.
After leaving Texas A&M in 1969, Williams severed most ties with the school

Another poster added the rest of that article which you deceptively left out

I hate the Whorns as much as the next guy, but they have more recent douchebaggery to hate them for rather than having to resort to a 62 year old letter.

You changed the wording. He said the coach had told them earlier in their career that they would not be integrating the team and yet they later did and he earned a letter. You also left out the section about even though he was failing in school one of the profs worked with him to help get him back in and graduate. Sounded like he also just didn't like the Corps which is understandable, dropout rate for the Corps was over 50% back then as it was hard as hell with a lot of hazing no matter what your skin color.
A&M like all schools in the South had some difficulties with ending segregation but overall it wasn't as bad as many others because of the Corps/military aspect that focused on discipline and treating everyone the same regardless of where you came from. Were there racists and rednecks who did and said stupid things? Absolutely, but as mentioned A&M also elected a black man as Student Body President in 1976, that was the students who made that vote.

Texas Monthly does only one thing of any value, the Annual Top 50 BBQ Joints Edition.

What’s with all these OU fans jumping to defend Texas in every thread. If somebody was shitting on Alabama, I can’t imagine Auburn fans being the first to jump to their aid.
In reference to the letter in the article, I agree that it was probably nothing out of bounds at the time but statues have been toppled and historical figures canceled for less.
I’m actually surprised there hasn’t been a movement to rename Texas stadium already

This thread is so pointless and worthless. There are so many better things to shred UT about.

Dr. McClure was the guest speaker at the Colorado Springs Muster in 2002. When I met him, there was almost a regal air about him.

I bet you would've laid into DKR right on the golf course there, right? I made plenty of Mexican friends in the oilfield and I make fun of them too. They have a sense a humor & aren't sensitive pussies

This thread is really bad. I thought y'all might become slightly less pathetic with the season fast approaching but y'all have stepped it up to another level the last few days.

You’re mad at A&M for Texas Monthly publishing the article?
