You are today where Auburn fans were in the days following the Harsin hire.

DeBoer will probably do well, at least initially, with the roster he's inheriting from Saban. You'd almost have to try not to do well with that level of talent. The question is whether he can sustain it long term through recruiting.

Would it surprise you to learn that Saban is a better judge of talent than the recruiting services?

There's a UGA bump as well, and it's because the writers at recruiting websites know that their communications and journalism careers don't make them as qualified as Kirby in evaluating talent.

So which is it then? Saban only won games and championships because he had loaded rosters or recruiting services lied and Saban won games and championships because he was that good of a coach and coached up inferior talent?

According to the recruiting rankings, Alabama had far more talent than every other team. Alabama also had the GOAT coach.

If Alabama had better players than everybody, and a better coach than everybody, they should have won ALL of their games. Why didn't they? Coaching or talent?

If the recruits are overrated (bumped) why are schools trying to raid the roster?

Because the game is still played by people, not data sets and algorithms.

truth probably lies somewhere in between

Alabama certainly was not lacking in talent and the guys they put into the NFL proved that. But if you are to believe the recruiting rankings entirely, Saban probably should've won more titles. I mean, If you have 7 straight #1 classes and the best coaching

Saban was a good developer, especially earlier in his career and especially on defense. But Saban's titles were won on Talent and depth of talent. wave after wave of players on both lines, it is just demoralizing. If you wanted to beat saban, and you did not have the talent he had, you literally needed generational talent at the qb positions. Guys like Manziel, Burrow, and Daniels.

But honestly, it is better to be the #1 recruiting coach than it is to be the #1 x's and o's coach

You'd still think Saban would've had more undefeated full seasons than 1, being the best coach with the best players.

Alabama (the state) has tons of talent and it grows every year.

Georgia's roster has been more highly rated recently.

Nope. It really hasn't Bama had the top talent for 2023 and for 4 of the last 6 years (according to 247).

*edit* for the sake of comparison, Bama had a 90% blue chip rate for 2023 while UGA had a 77% blue chip rate as per 247.

I wouldn't take McELroy as the gospel. He spends his time trying to bash Bama so he seems neutral. He sucked as a QB by the way.

And I can guarantee you that Alabama would have been either #1 or #2 on the talent composite from 2010 onwards

Look at blue chip % of roster. BAMA has the 3 highest rates since 2018 (I forget which years specifically and do not feel like looking it up right now...in a TEAMs meeting). For 2023, they were 13% pts higher than the 2nd place UGA team. I know BAMA beat them head up, but many still believe UGA to have been the more talented team. Results of the BAMA bump? I don't know.

Recruiting services bumped the Bama guys up to sell subscriptions

They do that to several teams, including Ole Miss.

Didn't 247 give a fake person with a fake Twitter handle 3 stars after claiming to have been offered by Bama?

No offense you sound like a hater. The hs coaching in the state is great, esp. compared to other states.

Old news. Tom Lemming admitted in emails he rated Notre Dame offers higher than others. This was in the very early 2000’s.

The majority of people ranking these kids never played sports of any kind much less football.

This is exactly the reasoning here. Recruiting sites are full of nerds that never actually excelled at football and use all sorts of metrics to try to determine star ratings, metrics that have no bearing on actual potential.

So when you have an elite Coach/Coaching staff like Saban's at Alabama - who's proven to win championships at a high level - heavily recruiting a guy your site has listed as a 4-star or 3-star, that player suddenly gets the benefit of the doubt. "He must be great and full of potential if the GOAT and all his paid professional analysts are going after him hard. We must be missing something they're seeing!"

Viola, suddenly a 4-star becomes a 5-star, a 3-star gets bumped to a 4-star on their site. And honestly it makes perfect sense. If Saban and Co. are recruiting this guy and have proven that their methods win championships, then this guy must be a championship-level recruit.

There was also a Saban/Bama bump for any team that beat them. Heck, it got texas into the playoffs. But I guess that’s gone now.

There are 9 teams in the NFL with 4 or more Bama players starting and a few teams with 6+ lol.
