Georgia knew who they were going to hire at the time. They didn't fire him and then try to figure it out. The Gators should do the same. This is how teams end up paying crazy buyouts.

When Stricklin fired Dan he had Billy Napier in mind.

In fact even before that Scott Stricklin had Napier in mind when Dan was begging nfl teams to give him an interview for a HC job after 2020

Just to be clear, a lot of the reporting in the years after Richt’s departure indicate that the reason UGA pulled the trigger when they did in late 2015 was because the admin and boosters had had their eye on Kirby for some time and knew he was about to take a head coaching job.

That coupled with really bad performances against Alabama and Florida, and it was a done deal.

Had it not been Kirby’s “time”, so to speak, Richt likely would have coached Georgia for at least another 2-3 years. Also, if one play goes differently in the 2012 SECCG, Richt wins a national title, coaches UGA until his Parkinson’s diagnosis and there’s a statue of him right now at the Butts-Mehre Hall.

And who knows when Kirby gets to UGA at that point. May not have been until 2020 or even beyond.

Crazy how the timelines work, but TL;DR, every situation has its own unique inner workings. To say Richt got fired for going 9-3 is leaving some key details out.

Richt won the SEC his second year, and his worst season in his first 4 years, was his first year. His first year ever as a head coach at any level.

And his worst year - in his first 4 years - is better than Napier's best.

Try harder.

The SEC was not the powerhouse then as it is now. I think Alabama was the best win you had that year IIRC, and we were a 3 loss team. You played like 2 other teams that finished ranked maybe 3?

Highlighted by the fact you won the SEC and then played a team not ranked in the top15 in the bowl game. You played Arkansas in the SECG and they finished the season not even ranked.

Your previous coach was there for like 5 years and finished ranked in 4 of them, including his last. Under Mullen, Florida got worse every year going from 10 win team down to a losing record the year before Napier was hired.

Not even close to being the same situations.

Florida fans hate Napier ...so not sure what you are trying to accomplish...he is booed, his buyout was raised, our AD was booed at the basketball teams celebration, the Swamp is not selling out now(used to be hard to get tickets)..so um...UF fans hate Nap, not sure why you have a hard time getting it....

How many buyouts were they on the hook for when Richt was sent hiking? Scott Striklin is still there. They shouldn't do anything with Napier until Striklin is discarded. No way on God's green earth should Striklin make the next football hire.

Sadly he is not going anywhere soon with the mens BBall title. We hate him as Gator fans, but it is what it is.

Yeah that's why Georgia moved on from Richt. Had Kirby not been available they'd have kept Richt. If you are goung to part ways with a coach you had better something better ready to go. If Florida fires Napier "just because" the next coach is likely to produce similar results.

Smart was the 1 in a 1000 upgrade. Most schools once they head down this path destabilize their own program and become adrift with no way to control the direction.

Franklin was fired because the NIL donors got mad they didn't work out. The fans chanting fire Franklin sucked the wind out of their own program.
