They're a threat to our economic interests which is a major reason to the formation of the post WW2 order in Europe. It's all about economics and our sphere of interest and control. Even Reagan understood that.

Europe should rearm and pay their fair share. I agree. But this is about us controlling an area strategic to our economic interests. You don't cede territories and nations any more than you allow yourself to be diluted in an equity position, unless forced.
