I played against him and Travis Minor in HS. Saw another thread about him going to USA and it got me wondering what happened to ol boy. He was an OC at Bama and rising star for a hot second.

Then he went to Texas when Mack and Boom were there. He kind of went down the tube along with them.

He was a shitastic OC at Alabama who was asked to find another job greatly delaying his rising star status. He eventually became a shitty head coach at Houston and had to rehab his image at Alabama after getting shitcanned

His career hit a major speed bump when he pulled a Bobby Petrino with a student trainer while he was coaching at tu.

He did a decent job at Houston after Herman. Nothing spectacular but not a crash and burn.

True but he's never distinguished himself. There has to be a reason he hasn't been picked up elsewhere at a major program.

Heard a funny story about Saban when Major was his OC and we played Georgia in the game they beat us in overtime. When Georgia threw the TD to beat us, Saban got on his headsets and was yelling looking for his OC. "Major!? Major! That's how you call plays to win a @#$%% football game!!" Major took the running backs coach job at Texas the next year.

You cannot be thin-skinned coaching at Bama under Saban

I do recall him being at Houston. Didn’t know he pulled a Petrino. Dude was the starting QB there. Would have thought he got all that out of his system.

Loved seeing him play. Always thought he got a raw deal with Simms.

His last game in the Holiday Bowl was a blast to watch.

He’s a soulless ginger and should not be a coach at all. Should work in a coal mine away from sunlight!

I think he is back at Bama as an analyst along with the rest of the herd of former washed up head coaches trying to get a another shot at the big show under the Nick Saban Second Chance Initiative Program.

Boozed and pantie chased while he was the OC in T-town in 07. You can get away with it when you are a savant like Lane Kiffin and Jeremy Pruitt to an extent but not when you are a 20 something year old bum like Applewhite at the time.

He lost to Army by a score of 70-14 in his last game as Houston’s head coach in 2018. I’d say he did crash and burn.

I imagine it went down like this.
Saban, "I read that your school, Texas, offerered you a job as a qb coach."
Applewhite "Yes, but I'm Bama's OC, so I will decline."
Saban, "Yeah, you should probably take that job."

At the Fiesta Bowl in 2009 he banged a female UT student. She was a trainer for the football team.

But he didn't, really. He was HC at Houston and got fired for… not terrible results? They seem to have fired him solely to hire Dana Holgorsen, who is kind of really sucking right now.

This is exactly what happened. Hi did okay, but got the holy hell beat out of him by Army in the bowl game after an 8-4 season, and that gave Houston the excuse it needed to fire him and go after Holgersen.

I realize it was a really bad bowl performance, but it's some out of character ballsiness for a G5 team to replace a coach after two years of going 8–5.
