Auburn has been awful this decade. Using us as barometer for your defense is sad

its getting worse each year under Kelly.

Even I, as a Bama fan, can realize that they dropped from 28 PPG in 2023 to 24 PPG in 2024.

We have been very bad for most of the past 5 years. Get your laughs in now because the 2025 LSU defense will look like the chinese bandits of old.

But they are telling us the defense will be good this year

Worse OL than last year, same QB... even if the defense is marginally better I'm not sure that makes a massive difference with how tough of a schedule they have.

They will be at a disadvantage on the line of scrimmage ((both sides of the ball) I'd say in 5 games (Bama, Florida, Clemson, SCAR, TAMU) and OU could have an advantage there if the O-Line plays well.

part of it is the lack of a running game that has put the defense in a bind at times

LSU defense may not be good but Auburn could only scrap together 18 last time the teams met.

Watching Auburn play football at all is like watching a crippled man try and dance the foxtrot.

When you dig into the details it’s not odd at all. Lots of it Kelly’s fault when first hired and the defensive staff he put together & the LSU administration’s fault in being way behind in NIL collective and organizing a solid GM team.

LSU’s defense will be significantly better this year. You can take that to the bank.

LSU’s defense should be better. But it likely won’t be great. Kelly’s defenses have, with few exceptions, always gotten lit up like a Christmas tree when facing top 25 teams. At Notre Dame he had enough cupcakes to average things out better than now. Here is the average number of points his D surrendered against top 25 teams the last 10 years (and his record against those teams).

Average points given up by year and record against top 25 teams.

24: 34 points (1-3)
23: 45 points (1-3)
22: 35 points (2-2)
21: 25 points (2-1)
20: 31 points (2-2)
19: 27 points (2-2)
18: 18 points (4-1)
17: 24 points (3-3)
16: 41 points (0-2)
15: 30 points (2-3)

Only one season has he had a really good defense. That is also one of only two seasons he had a winning record against top 25 teams. Six of the ten seasons his D averaged giving up over 30 points per game. Defense has never been his forte.

LSU has had one season where they had a better scoring defense than Auburn since 2017.

I mean, sometimes you have to tear down to rebuild a contender. And we are actually a contender again this year, after winning a natty 5 years ago. Meanwhile Auburn...

Florida and LSU used to be great on defense...will again. Don't know when but it will happen. No worries.
