Trying to figure out how being named the #2 team in 2007 after a bunch of other teams lost is the same as getting called the second best team in 2011 despite already losing to number one, when there were still other undefeated teams around

Correct. The definition of backdoor is finishing 2nd in your division, 3rd in your conference, not having to play a 13th game (conference championship game), and still being gifted a berth in the playoff.
