LSU athletics has billionaire donors willing to donate large amounts.
Note: The LSU Foundation has over $1.5 billion in excess funds/investments and it has risen quickly over the last 2 years. Of course neither that $$$ nor any tax revenue/university funds pay for athletics at all...not one penny.

That's not really how endowments work, but even if it was, the state would just sell Lake Charles or something to keep funding football.
