LSU Fans—Max Johnson Question

He was awesome in his first start ever by knocking off a top 15 team on the road during their senior night with everything to play for including a likely playoff spot.
Is he the starter next year or will there be competition?
(Side note: he’s from my high school albeit a while ago)

They dont have a fricking clue, no matter what they say.

He looked great in both of his games, but Brennan also played well. Offense wasn't an issue. Finley another true freshman won a pair of games also.

He looked pretty good against Bama. But cant forget that Brennan played well and LSU had a really good offense when he was the starter

It will likely be an open competition between Brennan, Johnson, Finley, and Nussmeier although I expect Finley to transfer to a smaller school during the spring/summer.
The best option at starter will likely be between Johnson and Brennan and very dependent on what style of offense Peetz is running.

No way he'll be named the starter before the end of the summer.

It’ll be interesting to see. I obviously hope he wins it. His brother is also like on of the beat TE in the 22(?) class.

No one really knows. It will be a completely open competition, as opposed to last year when Orgeron specifically states that it was Brennan’s team.
Finley has the most arm talent out of the group, and looked great against South Carolina in his first start and good in a tough, comeback spot at Arkansas in the rain. But he looked downright terrible once the defenses he faced were above average.
Johnson clearly has the two best skins on the wall for 2020. He probably has the weakest arm, but is the most mobile, and looked like a veteran at feeling the pressure.
Brennan set all kinds of school records for yards, completions, completion percentage, TDs, etc. in his first three starts. You can’t ignore the 1-2 record, but by all accounts the locker room was a dumpsterfire up until the end of the season. I would have liked to have seen him play more once the malcontents were weeded out and the younger guys started getting playing time. He looked really good against Vandy and Mizzou when he started stepping up in the pocket and ripping it down field. It was clear that the entire offense was open while Brennan was in the backfield; which is to be expected for a guy in his 12th year.
I’d say Johnson is the QB of the future; but if it’s close after spring camp, Brennan probably gets the nod because of all the time they have invested in him.

New coaches, new offense. Starter won't be named until August.

This.
Nobody knows who will start right now, but it's probably between Brennan and Johnson.
We'll be in great shape at QB either way.

Dude it’s a whole new coaching staff running the offense. Competition is wide open. Anything else said is politics to keep Brennan from leaving

Brennan has/had a great live arm, but it took him 3 years to earn the job, and he got it mostly by default.
Then, he put up great numbers, but didn't seem to inspire or elevate the team to win.
Then he got injured with a soft tissue injury that knocked him out for the year... a painful recovery for an unguaranteed spot (and he comes from money, which means he has options should he choose to do something else).
Finley also has a great arm, but seems to get confused at times. Yeah, he's a freshman, so no big deal.
Johnson has the least arm of the three, but is also the guy who seems to have the "it" factor.
Take what he did against Fla and Ole Miss, and add in that late drive against a good A&M defense (yeah, I know it was garbage time and meaningless except for pride, but Jimbo was calling TO's and didn't want to give it up).
In fact, it WAS just "for pride"... which is exactly what you need from a leader. Doesn't matter that they couldn't win when he came in, he pulled the team together and scored, instead of just playing out the string.
He did that as a true freshman.
If I'm a new coach coming in (OC), I'm going with the guy I can develop, instead of the guy with one year left, if it's at all close.

The debate heading to fall practice will be more along the lines of will Brennan be the starter if healthy or will there be a competition between he and Max. I imagine Brennan will enter camp as the "starter" but both will get 1st team reps. I think Finley ends up transferring

SEC don't like hearing that.
If the LSU Defense can improve just a little, maybe we win 12 games by 55-50 scores. (2 very good hires with the LB and DL Coaches. Weak hire for DC. The LB Coach actually has more DC experience than the actual DC.

Why are you all in on Peetz but don't like the DC hire? They're basically the same experience wise.

I mean it isn't like the guy he was backing up was some scrub

To be fair, saying he has the weakest arm on the team needs a little context. Brennan and Finely both have top tier NFL arm strength. He’s not exactly Chad Pennington out there. His arm strength is comparable to many other successful QBs.

It's all guesses and opinions, so I'll throw mine in. It's been a very long time since LSU has had a qb room with this much potential. I think Brennan doesn't play again for LSU. I also think the coaches are ok with that. It's better for a qb to have some wheels in todays game and Brennan doesn't fit that mold.

If LSU wants to win they'll start the Georgia Boy.
