combination of talent and guts for us.

To me this is what Hodson had the most of. He could take a lick and pop back up.

I could not compare him to one LSU QB since then.

He was a huge celebrity in those days when I growing up in BR.

Don’t know about ranking, but he was great.

Tommy was a great college qb. Very poised and had a great sense of what was going on everywhere on the field.

I find it hard to compare players from decade to decade. So much depends on players around the stars.

Mizzou does not get much respect for their quarterback, since the talents level around the quarterback was not as good as Alabama or other power house teams that are loaded of 4 and 5 stars across the board.

As far as LSU history goes, Tommy Hodson is in a league of his own. He really is one of the great Tigers to come through that program. Whenever you talk about the great players of LSU, he will always get a mention. He’s just too damn tough and talented to not get a mention.

Yeah, but he never became a big time pro QB. Don’t know why.

Just a few personal observations:played golf in a Tiger fund raising tourney with his former TE, a few yrs after they both graduated and he said, paraphrasing to be PC, "Tommy "scored" more than any football player in the history of LSU; Tommy used his NFL signing bonus to pay for his dream house here in B.R.....as opposed to blowing it on wine, women, and cars; Tommy was quoted several times as retiring from the NFL because he got tired of being embarrassed by his teammates walking through the airport. Comparing R.D to him is a joke, as all he had was an arm & while gutless might be a stretch, not too much. JR had a great final season, his career was nowhere close to Hodson's.

His wife Andi V, dated one of my frat brothers for 3/4 years ( military guy later ) and when they broke up she and Hodson got together. She was a smoke show but I remember her as a really, really nice girl- sweet to everybody. They are still married so good for them. He was definitely BMOC along with Don Redden (RIP ).

A lot of heart to go with a lot of talent. He also knew how to use the talent around him. Considering he had great receivers and very good running backs and he used them all

Davis - 1st rd
Harvey Williams - 1st rd
Sammy Martin
Todd Kinchen
Tony Moss

Also his back up was very good as well. Mickey Guidry could have started for any other SEC team at the time

One of the all-time great QBs in LSU history. Probably second-best ever behind Jamarcus Russell. ***

Hodson had the luxury of Wendell Davis at WR. But Russell had a better WR corps in Bowe, Doucet, and Craig Davis. Every great QB had some great WRs to throw it to, so I think that's just kinda part of the deal.

***Assessment does not include Russell's NFL career, obviously.

Hodson played on some terrible New England teams. They went 1-15 his rookie year (1990) and they went through three QBs that year. Basically, he was put in a bad situation from the outset, and he never got the chance to develop into an NFL-caliber QB.

Isn’t it funny when LSU has no talent, they somehow have a great QB. When LSU has the talent, all they lack is a great QB.

He had amazing talent around him. Tough guy who played hard. Great question. I don’t think I can answer it. Different times.
