Thanks T Bird; good info. Largely confirms a lot of what I've heard. It's unusual for LSU to be thin on the DL and I'm wondering how it got that way.

Same story at LB.

Brick and Chavis just missed a lot in recruiting. Well, Chavis just didn't recruit really...his 1 "big get" was Clifton Garrett who was a huge bust.

The wealthier school paid more than LSU could muster. Pretty simple actually.

I mean is it that hard to resist flaming every fricking LSU related thread? I can understand if the thread is flame from the get go, but Christ on a cracker it was a legitimate question and it gets derailed from the start.

Whatever is a negative will be blamed on Chavis

you aggies sure cherry pick the LSU posts. sure, there is a lot of fans pissed off at Chavis and some bull shite has been said. I have steadfastly maintained that Chavis is a damn good DC. BUT, there are certain FACTS about Chavis that are undeniable...

1) he isn't a recruiter. he'll talk to recruits at the "office" when they visit but he rarely does anything else with recruiting. IF you have super recruiters on the D side, you'll be OK with this but we didn't and our front 7 gradually degraded. Chavis' best front 7's were the one's he inherited upon his arrival at LSU
2) Chavis defensive schemes and play calling are as predictable as it gets. Alabama outfoxed him every damn game late in the halves and CHAVIS NEVER EVER changed shite. and Bama wasn't the only team to do so.

it is possible that Chavis will change but if I were you I wouldn't bet an indian nickel on it. IF he can get his kind of athlete, which is the smallish speed demons and y'all have quality secondary coaching y'alls D will improve, esp against the pass. IF you don't compensate for his lack of recruiting prowess y'all will be beaten right up the middle. and LSU, Bama, Arkansas and the 2 Mississippi schools all have the blocking schemes and the beef to do it.

Not sure why you're so upset by facts. Are we supposed to believe Chavis is an elite or even decent recruiter considering the shape he left our LBs in?

You would really choose a marginal DC and a good recruiting DL coach over the best DC in the SEC?

Perspective remember? Just because he was a good coordinator at LSU doesnt mean that it will translate over to A&M. Just like because Steele had 70 rung on him doesnt mean he'll tank at LSU or vice versa either case. LSU fans have answered that question a billion times and yalls just counter with "Melting!! Your so butthurt gargle gargle"

LSU didnt pay Chavis because he wasn't worth what he was asking. He wasn't recruiting and wasn't putting a good enough product on the field to command what he wanted. In case you aggies still havent noticed, our DL/LB talent and subsequent defenses haven't been the same the last few years.

Maybe LSU didn't feel as though he was worth that much.

For the most part we have realistic expectations

Ive seen someone from every fanbase drop this line and it has yet to be true in every single circumstance except some programs have a warrant to their delusions.

You better pray your defense is good and ours sucks otherwise you invested a lot of effort this off-season for absolutely nothing.

I know y'all have had some early departures to the NFL in years past; have there been any from the DL lately? Can't remember whether Hunter used all his eligibility or left early.

It's funny because the talent that formed the 2011 defense came in in the 2009 class which Chavis had no part of. Without that recruiting class I doubt Chavis would've had the success he had. Every year since has been a decline. Thank god for Corey Raymond and his DBs or last year would've been a disaster.

Anthony Johnson (former #1 DT recruit) left as a junior and went undrafted in the 2014 draft. Ego Ferguson left as a RS JR and was drafted in the 2nd round that year as well. That's why we were terrible up the middle early in 2014. It took a SO and true freshman to step up because the rest of the bodies at DT weren't prepared by Haley. Rasco was a former 5* who used his eligibility and went undrafted. Hunter left as a JR and it was said he looked better than Von Miller coming out of HS. There has been little to any development as of recent.

Pretty much all the DL have been leaving early if they start. Hunter included. Rasco did stay though.

The #1 defense in the SEC last year is considered declining?

I give Steele a year before he crumbles under unrealistic expectations
