I'm worried about it to be honest. Would love to be wrong but don't think they're going to be great. And if they sustain a couple of injuries I think they have the potential to be a weak link.

Rundown:

DEs
Basically a big unknown, Bower and Neal are brand new starters. Neal has supposedly made the biggest leap and certainly looks the part at about 6'1 260. Key has been outright beastly, almost unblockable on a pass rush by even our veteran OTs. He will be first guy off the bench and in there for 3rd and long situations for sure. The rest of the DEs you havent heard much on other than Washington is pushing Teuhema for the backup DE on the other side.

DTs
Godchaux is a future star in the making. It means a lot if you can start as a freshman in the SEC and he should have a breakout year. LaCouture is seasoned and steady, nothing flashy but is very solid. Thomas is finally healthy and should provide useful depth here with Gilmore and Herron filling things out. Herron looked like he would have more of an impact last year then struggled off the field with certain things hampering playing time so they are hoping he takes that next step this year.

All in all, there's simply a lot of unknowns. I think the ceiling for this DL would be about #3/#4 in the conference and the floor could be as low as #9/#10. What we're really going to benefit from is a GREAT DL coach in Coach O who can actually coach and they will be much much more aggressive than previous DLs so expect sacks and forced fumbles to go up significantly. The pass rush last year was just above non existent.

How so? We're killing it in recruiting and the defense is pumped to get on the field. No need to comment on variables because no one has seen it play out? I'm not going to shite on Chavis because he could make yalls defense better. Try some perspective once in awhile.

As much as you want us to be jealous, we're not. Chavis had his faults and it was just time to part ways. Steele may not be any better but the combination of getting rid of Brick and hiring Coach O will have a big improvement on our DL no doubt.

You would really choose a marginal DC and a good recruiting DL coach over the best DC in the SEC?

Godchaux will be a nightmare in the backfield and LaCouture will be our nose tackle essentially. Bower and Neal are super athletic juniors and the guys behind them are all pass rush specialists.

Our DTs are borderline elite and our DEs should be as stout as last year. It could be on par with 2012's defensive line with a lot of speed coming off the edge and stout DTs who can get into the backfield with ease.

Our scheme has changed a lot so instead of the line holding their blocks for linebackers to make plays, they'll be shooting gaps and letting the linebackers clean up behind them. I expect a 100% increase in TFLs and sacks and I'm not joking at all.

For the most part we have realistic expectations. We don't hold a candle to the average LSU fan's delusion

The best defensive line coach in the country is on our sideline.

Sorry SEC.

Godchaux and, it appears, Key should be really good. Right now, it doesn't look like we have the level of talented depth on the defensive live that the vintage LSU defenses of the last 10-12 years have had (this is part of why Key should play a good bit). That's a result, I think, of some lazy recruiting by Chavis. As good as he might be from a scheme standpoint (and that's debatable--see the last 8 months on this board), nobody can realistically claim that he's a great recruiter. One guy to keep an eye on is Sione Teuhema--he could be a good pass rusher from the edge.

In terms of scheme, the word is that we'll be more aggressive and bring more pressure. Of course, that will have advantages and disadvantages. Talent in the secondary, though, should give us a little more freedom to bring blitzes. Supposedly, Orgeron is also teaching better pass-rushing technique than Haley did. It remains to be seen how much truth there is to that and what dividends it pays, but Orgeron has always been regarded as a good defensive line coach (whatever you might think of him at higher positions).

Of course, I should make clear that (like the vast majority of people on here) I don't have any insider knowledge. The above is based on media reports, information from The Rant, and projections by various "experts," and my layman's analysis of the games last year. Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks T Bird; good info. Largely confirms a lot of what I've heard. It's unusual for LSU to be thin on the DL and I'm wondering how it got that way.

Why does it bother Aggies more that he left LSU than it does Tiger fans?

It got that way because John Chavis couldn't recruit to save his life
