Not much to talk about other than 1958 and Billy Cannon.

"Biggest" Probably knocking off #1 Florida. Beating a top 5 Auburn team twice comes to mind.

They had a good coach in Cholly Mac who couldn't beat the Bear. Several SEC teams had good coaches who couldn't beat Bear. Difference is LSU fired him. Didn't work out. The lowest of the low was hiring Curley who it turns out only appeared to be worth half a shite because Brett Favre went to Southern Miss. Then DiNardo got them back to mediocrity and Saban looked over and realized he could pull one of the greatest elevations in CFB history and make them elite.

They weren't. They just had a really bad decade.

Which in all reality was as good or better than Tennessee's last decade.

Dinardo went to 3 bowls with 3 wins and wins over number 1 Florida, top 5 and top 15 Auburn teams, and top 15 Arkansas. UTs only win of any note is over a georgia team that lost its one offensive player on the first play of the game.

Dinardo was bringing y'all to the independence bowl and had a team full of purse snatchers and sexual deviants. He gets way more credit than he deserves. Saban wouldn't have gone there if he knew he couldn't win. Y'all had the worst consecutive string of coaches in sec history.

So just watched the highlights of these games a new things standout.

*LSU fans are still as passionate and insane about their teams then as they are now...
*That stadium before the renovations looked like a smaller version of the Big House...
*LSU had some fast as players and that defense was nasty.

Lol at Auburn.

Dinardo got a fan base that had shut down after years of Curley to get excited about football again. He went out and got the biggest star in the state Kevin Faulk at a time where they were going to Miami, FSU, Florida and Colorado (yes CU was badass back in the 90s with Kordell stewart straight outta NOLA)

The 2001 roster had a large amount of NFL talent that Saban had nothing to do with.

Dinardo/the LSU administration at the time was unwilling to pay the money to keep good coordinators such as Carl Reese and Morris watts.

This board will tell you that we sucked, but in reality, we had a lot of very good teams.

1958, 1959, 1961, 1962 1969, 1970, 1986, 1987

7 SEC titles. We were probably 4th best in the SEC historically at the turn of the century, behind Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.

It's ironic how many great coordinators LDU has had on payroll. Mack brown and Jimbo Fisher but the only coordinator that got a shot was Archer and he ruined that for everyone. Lol

Was Dinardo actually good.

He was at first. The 1996 team was damn good, went 10-2, and only a loss to Alabama kept them out of the SEC title game. The 1997 LSU team went 9-3, beat Florida and destroyed Alabama, a 3 point loss to Auburn kept that team out of the SEC title game. Beat Notre Dame in their bowl. Then in 1998 they went 4-7, with a ton of close losses to good teams. 1999 they were a total disaster. Most of their losses were blowouts and they finished 3-8. Like Dinardo said, he did it backwards. Had success early and failure late.

it would have worked just fine if Bo didn't die. We even survived that well, the problem was promoting a too young archer.

Dinardo got Faulk here and the 96 and 97 team were good but got shafted by bowls for some reason

The LSU sucked before 2000 narrative makes absolutely zero sense.

Dinardo decided to go down with lou. Oddly enough lou seemed to be ok in the indy bowl and then boom we sucked on D.

our offense was still badass in 98

all dinardo had to do was fire lou after the terrible 98 season and he probably saves himself.

I don't think we get near what we are today if Dinardo had righted the ship but it was some fun teams for 3 years.

Yeah, it was an anomaly that Alabama won that game in Death Valley. We couldn't stop Kevin Faulk to save our lives. He was a monster. LSU dominated that game. Should have never passed down at the goal line up 16-7 late. Give the ball to #3.

I didn't read all of this thread but I started watching football in the late 80s early 90s. I remember a game where Alabama was beating LSU (like normal). I was watching the game and although Alabama thoroughly dominated the score, I kept thinking to myself "we don't have players like this." The DL for LSU had athletes that we didn't have. I turned to my dad and asked him, "why doesn't LSU win more games?" They got 300 lb dudes that can RUN. He said "yeah if they ever get a real coach it will be tough to stop em." So I grew up thinking that LSU was a sleeping giant. It took some time, but LSU finally got a real coach and they have been winning ever since. They will probably cycle down for a few years but they will be back. Maybe they will be great next yr who knows for sure.
