LSU basketball looks a whole lot like Alabama last year

2 tough games coming up against Saint Mary's and Furman, too. Really need to sweep those to leave the OOC schedule with a good taste in their mouths (and with at least 1 solid OOC win). Houston is a good team, but going 0-4 vs FSU/OSU/Houston/Saint Mary's would be a pretty disappointing pre-conference run (and Furman is lingering out there too).

The sum just doesn't seem as good as the parts yet. Tough to get a new roster all gelled together in a few months like Wade is trying to do there, though.

We might as well decline NIT, another year of wasted talent. Good luck rest of SEC.

They're a prime candidate to have a "wake up" moment sometime in conference play and go on a run. Just need to get 1 or 2 OOC wins to make sure it isn't a total blank slate.

tRant is completely pathetic today. Two losses to top 15 FSU (Who beat the brakes off of UF) and top 25 Houston. We had big leads in the second half of both games. Sure, the collapses down the stretch were disappointing, and the OSU loss was bad, but we're literally a few plays away from being 9-1 and probably ranked in the top 15.

Yes, there are definite issues on both sides of the ball. I just don't see how the entire fanbase wants to mail it in because of that. I bet if we make our free throws to close out FSU and hold on for dear life last night people would think this is a Final Four team instead of wanting to fire the coach.

We've proven that we're probably a fringe top 25 team right now yet we've got "fans" already looking at buyouts to try to figure out how expensive it would be to fire CWW.

I mean, you still lost those games. They aren't bad losses, but you are looking at basically having an OOC slate with 0 NCAAT quality wins. That isn't ideal.

Nobody is saying fire Will Wade. I'm comparing them to the Alabama team from last year (which went to the NCAAT and won their opening game, FYI). A bunch of young kids who are trying to figure out how to play together and play against grown men. Like I said, I expect they'll have a wake up moment and go on a nice little run in SEC play. However, they really need to beat Saint Mary's and Furman or they are going to have an ugly narrative when they get to March (even if they go 10-8 in SEC play or something like that).

I agree with this. I believe they will come around, just hope it’s not too late for a tourney run. I wouldn’t want to play this LSU team late in the season for sure.

It’s still way too early to write Wade off, but he’s got to get this starving fan base a big win to rally around. We’re still loaded on paper, but we’re not fun to watch at all right now

You haven't been to tRant this morning.. lol.

I know we lost the games, and I know it isn't ideal. I was more talking about what the narrative would be if we had held on for dear life in those two games. There's a lot of work to do for this team to get in the tournament, but half of our fans are already declining NIT bids and saying our coach is terrible.

LOL - yea way too early to be writing them off. No bad losses yet, competitive losses to good teams. Beat Saint Mary's and Furman and LSU heads into SEC play with decent OOC and no ugly marks on their resume.

The talent is there. You can see it in Reid and Smart. We also have the ability to be extremely efficient on offense.

However, we are currently letting Waters run around jacking up 3s and turning the ball over.

Wade needs to get his frumpy shite together

We have major troubles closing out games right now. Up 15 in 2nd half vs. Houston, lose. Up 9 with 3 minutes left against FSU, lose.

Team clearly has some great talent but isn't putting it together right now. Waters is playing like a total buffoon which is the most mind boggling thing of all.

The most frustrating thing is getting beat on the boards by a team like Houston. We had EVERY size advantage you could want, but we sat our tallest most efficient player in Bigby-Williams almost all night. Just a mind blowing bad decision.

Sorry that some of us want actual success for the program and don't run around shitting skittles and defending dog shite like you do.

Continue to be happy losing to Northeastern, UCF and Georgia State, going 17-15 and going to the NIT if we don't have a Top 10 pick bailing us out late. I'll continue to post criticism when we suck and don't play to our potential.

Congrats on not being a "cuck" or something.

LSU is in a critical spot right now. They are currently out of the NCAA Tournament Field and its going to take some big wins to get back in.

If you look at their next 6 games, all are winnable but you've got 5 out of the 6 that are also tough games that could very well be lost.

#53 St. Mary's in Las Vegas
#115 Furman at home
#219 Louisiana Monroe at home
#70 Alabama at home
#50 Arkansas in Fayetteville
#60 Ole Miss in Oxford

LSU needs to win five of the next 6 to even stay on the bubble. The only way to get back into the projected field is to sweep the next six games. That's a tall order.

If LSU only wins 3 or fewer of the next six games, they can probably go ahead and start making plans for the NIT.

The Saint Mary's game is huge for them. They really need to get a win there.

GTFO of here. This is a primarily young team that has yet to gel. They will find their rhythm and which rotation works best. Stop with the "wasted talent" bull shite.

The issue is not the losses to good teams... the issue is that LSU is running out of chances to impress. Close losses does nothing to improve your resume unless you can point to some solid wins as well. LSU has no such wins to date.

Here are LSU's opponents by KenPom rating...

#15 Florida State- LOSS
#36 Houston- LOSS
#65 Oklahoma St.- LOSS
---
#83 UNC Greensboro- WIN
#116 Charleston- WIN
#119 Memphis- WIN
#136 La Tech- WIN
#297 Grambling- WIN
#300 SE Louisiana- WIN
#343 Incarnate Word- WIN

The good news is there are no bad losses. The bad news is there are exactly zero resume-enhancing wins. LSU is not going to get into the Tournament because of their ability to beat teams outside the Top 80.

Eventually LSU is going to have to start winning some of these bigger games. You're already 0-3 against the KenPom Top 65.

You have 11 more games against current Top 65 teams, which means you'll need to go 7-4 in those games just to get back to .500 overall against Top 65 opponents. Going 7-4 against that slate and also not losing any other games against several good opponents such as #70 Alabama, #84 Texas A&M, etc. is a tall order.

Every single one of these close losses to good teams makes the hole you are digging out of that much deeper.

We've proven that we're probably a fringe top 25 team right now

How???

You are #49 in KenPom
You are #40 in the NCAA Net rankings
You are #47 according to Joe Lunardi's latest Bracketology which was released prior to the Houston loss

By all accounts, LSU is not a Top 25 team nor a "fringe" Top 25 team. You are hovering in the #40-#50 range.

And Auburn 3 years ago. Young teams don't understand how to close out games.
