If JT Lindsay doesn’t get shoe string tackled he breaks a TD run at the 7 minute mark in the 3rd quarter which would have made it 31-14 and the route would have been back on.
Football comes down to like 10 plays each game.

This is pretty much it. We didn't have a good game plan on defense in the first half, didn't do anything on offense either, and dug ourselves too big of a hole. Defense and offense did great to get the game tied, but LSU was never going to shut out a QB like Chambliss for the rest of the game.

Got out of zone defense and went to MEG. That last series in the first we played a 3 man front with 8 zone and Chsmbliss picked it apart.

I'm assuming there are enough plays in a defensive coordinator's playbook to blitz and disguise blitzes and just play Man the whole game instead of zone? I would assume man is always the better defensive scheme as long as you have the athletes to support it, I feel like zone is used almost like a crutch to cover up athletic deficiencies but I'm sure that's a very simplistic way of looking at it.
You can’t just blitz and go man against Trinidad all the time. When you mix it in there it can work some. But the danger when you blitz him and leave guys on an island is when he pulls his voodoo and escaped the pocket your DBs are turning and running with the receivers and there’s potentially no one to account for him running.

I've been impressed with his energy he plays with. I think he did miss a blitzer that caused Trinidad to throw the interception, which would have been a touchdown.

You run hot routes and break one with Deuce or if Chambliss gets out of pressure he’s got 20 yards between him and a DB with his back turned running the other way. You have to show multiple looks or ole miss adjusts and burns you.

Ole Miss did a great job in the first half of containing Leavitt in the pocket. They had some pursuit issues in the 2nd half and he's a wiry dude and escaped multiple times.

So zone is good for a few reasons. Prevent big plays, bait the offense, and help with the run.
When you are in zone there are fewer opportunities for homerun shots downfield, but more opportunities for 10-20yd passes. There's also very little room for yards after catch in zone since there's always multiple people nearby.
Zone defenses can trick the quarterback into thinking the defense is in man. A defender can drop into zone in a passing lane and get easy interceptions if the drop was deceptive enough.
Since zone has players backed off the line of scrimmage, DBs and linebackers have their eyes on the ball and not the recievers. If a run goes inside or outside you have players occupying those areas of the fields to immediately collapse into run support. It also inherently creates a QB spy to stop the QB from running the ball.
However, there is always going to be soft spots in the zone. If the QB can see them it allows easy 5-15 yard passes. If not, the QB is going to be throwing picks and contested balls.

I would have to rewatch but think Leavitt loosened up. They hit a few receivers in the middle which caused Ole Miss to slow the rushes.
The camera work was awful. You really couldn’t see what was going on down field during the game unless a pass was thrown there.

Yup. Straight up whiffed his man. If he’d slowed him down even it was a 70 yard td
I’m wrong here, we didn’t account for one guy in pass pro or the right guard missed his man

Along with general bad play that is why Petrino's offense tended to fall apart last year in the second half. He'd come out with a great game plan, the other team would make adjustments, and Petrino wouldn't adjust to their adjustments.

I wasn’t being critical, hoss…..simply making an observation.
Do you think your DBs are as good as years past?
I was shocked at how far off the LOS they were playing against UM. A few years ago, they would have been manned up on the LOS just about all night.

That's not really how that works. Chambliss and the OM coaching staff are good enough to figure out what the defense is doing and exploit it. Football is much more nuanced than the casual viewer realize.Posted on 9/21/26 at 2:51 pm to Craig86

I think pickett is a very good zone corner, idk about man.
