Cohen’s history is very mixed; starting in Tuscaloosa, then in Starkville, and now in Auburn. One thing that can not be denied is he is a GREAT self promoter.
What makes him a no go for me is his personal life. And you might argue that a person’s professional life and their personal life should remain separate. But that is hard when your professional job is being the face of a university. I dare you to google Nelle Bashinsky or Nelle Cohen. His wife’s obsession over what she obsesses, and how she beat people over the head with it, turned most people in Starkville against her. She couldn’t just be a “let me live my life” person. She demanded you agree with her. MSU was not sad to see her go.
She is not missed by Mississippi State athletics as she wanted to turn Mississippi State athletics into an activist group instead of just winning ball games.
And if you want a true look into crazy, google the Bashinsky family. Here is a link to Sloan Bashinsky, Jr’s blog. He is the son and name sake of the founder of Golden Flake. Nelle is a daughter. The other brother was found dead in a lake in Birmingham under sketchy circumstances they finally ruled a suicide. And that was probably correct. Anyway, if you want a look into insanity check this out.

ETA: Cohen’s wife Nelle is a grandaughter of Sloan Sr. Senior’s wife was also named Nelle; Mrs. John Cohen (Nelle Bashinsky) is his granddaughter, named after her grandmother. Nelle is the daughter of Sloan Jr. It is confusing. A flow chart is needed.
This isn’t sports. But it does impact sports considering how involved John Cohen is in college sports; and how damned involved Nelle wants to be. But just for social justice reasons.

His wife has been brought up a few times. Especially before the hire. AFAIK the wife has not been a problem yet.

No. I am a Mississippi State undergrad alum and have been invited to and attended several of the meet and great, how you doing, how’s that wallet feeling luncheons and events. I went to a couple when Cohen was AD.
I did have to google that link though.

By the way, take a look at the date of that Facebook post when they made her the face of Mississippi State athletics. And then look at the time line of when John got a new job. Not saying it is right or wrong. But it is what it is. Things take a little time, but like I said most in Starkville where not upset he “found” a new opportunity.

You might not agree with me. Or with this. But this cost him his job in Starkville. A gay pride group tied him and MSU athletics together with them at the hip. Because of his wife. That is why I say professional and personal lives can become intertwined.

Cohen has a transgender kid so the fact that his wife is on the board of a LGBT advisory board really isn’t shocking. Good for her. I hope she likes it in Auburn and feels welcomed.

Cool, glad that you are open minded. Her being a part of an advisor board isn’t why he found a new job. It was that the group she was a member of told the world that the Mississippi State athletic department was a member of it too. They went Bud Light before going Bud Light was even a thing.
