For someone so young, you'd think you'd understand how google works.

Lewis Grizzard understood small-town South better than anyone I ever read. His knowledge of people and human nature was unmatched.

A dark day when he left us.

ill be honest I don't know who he was (young enough i guess), but that story was really solid. Thanks to OP for sharing.

I love some good UGA/USC stories, even if we usually are on the losing end.

Well, if you must be that way, how about the headline:

Lewis Grizzard was truly a great Southern writer. His stories about Georgia and the South are legendary.

RIP Lewis and “Catfish” (his beloved Black Lab).

Without a doubt, it was the greatest headline in the history of sports journalism.

Makes for a great story but it never happened and Dicks indeed played against the Gamecocks that Saturday.

To this day, Vince Dooley calls it his most memorable column ever

Makes for another great story but this never happened either.

ETA Lewis did tell the story in his speaking engagements and in his book but it was made up.

Love this one,
A Yankee is someone from the north who comes south for a visit and returns home. A Damn Yankee is someone from the north who comes south and stays here!

I grew up in a Bulldog family living in Atlanta and had the pleasure of reading his articles in the AJC. The year after GA won the NC in 1980 they lost their 1st game of the next season to Clemson who wore all orange uniforms. The ONLY reason I remember that is due to his article in the AJC about losing to a bunch of orange popsicles, it was hysterical!
