So I decided too look up the 1939 Vols because I had never heard about this season before. They got their arse kicked in the Rose Bowl. 
You should have at least picked USC for this thread. They went undefeated too. But they had 2 ties.

Why did undefeated, untied, and unscored on Tennessee have to travel to California to play the No. 3 team in country, when Texas 8&4 got to play a lesser ranked team closer to home?
It doesn't matter how the bowls turned out...Texas 8&4 should have played Tennessee but didn't...therefore, not a legit title.

ETA: so they ran from 1939 National Chapions Tennessee, LSU in the 90s, Big Brother Texas in 2012, and Wake Forest in 2021.

A&M beat SEC Champ Tulane in the Sugar, they had weird tie breakers back then. More importantly Tennessee lost the Rose Bowl and it wasn't close. So your argument is a 1 loss UT that lost their Bowl game was better than an undefeated A&M that won their Bowl game.
Also, if you want to start counting only 1 Champion from back in the days prior to the Playoff that list is going to be long and controversial. Tons of schools count UPI Titles that don't include Bowl games (Texas got destroyed in the Cotton after the '70 season but still claim it).
A&M claims 3. All undefeated seasons. 1919 was undefeated, untied, unscored upon. Interestingly it was the same group from 1917 that was also undefeated, untied, and unscored upon (no Title claimed). That team volunteered en masse for WWI, then came back and did it again in 1919 after kicking the crap out of the Germans. They were some tough SOB's.
