Let's clear something up...Texas 8&4's 1939 "title" is not a legit title...

They finished the regular season No. 1 in the AP Poll, and Tennessee was No. 2. Both teams were 10-0 in the regular season.
Since those two teams didn't face off in the bowl game, we will never know who was the better team.
So, to be clear, Texas 8&4 has NO legit football titles.
Fun Note: The 1939 Vols were also the last team in NCAA history to go undefeated, untied, and unscored upon in the regular season.

The AP awarded before the Bowl Games
If they awarded after the Bowl games USC would have certainly been selected
USC was also undefeated and beat 2. Tennessee in the bowl
