League presidents to vote on new SEC schedule
quote:

League presidents and athletic directors will vote today on the new SEC football scheduling format, and a 6-1-1 plan (six games against division foes, one permanent opponent from the other division and one rotating opponent from the other division) is expected to pass, according to SEC commissioner Mike Slive and the coaches and athletic directors contacted.

I love Les to death but.. "Vague tradition", good Gawd.

I think a prerequisite for all new coaches is to read a history of the SEC and pass a friggin test.

I get what you're saying man but Saban has built and Les has placed LSU in a place where it shouldn't matter who is on the other sideline...on any Saturday. The club should conduct themselves as such, imo.

According to dbt's other thread y'all can excuse yourself from the SEC whenever you want, if you want an easy schedule.

I'm new to this SEC thing so help me out here. Is this normal that a coach whines about his tough schedule occasionally or is CLM simply taking the opportunity to angle for his preferred schedule. What the hell does he want, 6-2, 6-2-1, 6-3? Okay...then say it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't LSU won 2 crystal footballs in the last ten years, and was dancing for it last year? Wasn't Florida on the schedule then? I get it what he is trying to allude to without offending the schools whose team is 'down', but you gotta pick your fights. Not good timing on this one. Isn't LSU vs Florida a big deal rivalry, too?

I guess FL is not a nearby state to LA if Walmart in the other county is considered 'far'. The dude is funny. Is he always this wacky? If so, I gotta pay more attention to his quotes.

Having not been in this league before I am along for the ride on how the schedule is sorted. Don't care....except I really like playing Arky & LSU every year again, and the LSU game being last of the season is sweet. A virtual nail in the coffin to the old rivalry with that other in state school. Moving on. Love it.

Past History Supports Permanent Rivals

Actually, the non-division format set forth when the SEC added Arkansas and South Carolina to get to 12 teams and split into divisions for the first time was not a “vague” stab at what rivalries were more important. It was based on economic term much older than the SEC – the haves and have nots.

“One of the first things we did was decide who were the haves and have nots based on history,” said Doug Dickey, who was Tennessee’s athletic director from 1985 through 2002 and Florida’s head football coach from 1970-78.

“And we put three in each division,” Dickey said in a telephone interview. “Based on history, the haves were Alabama, Auburn and LSU in the West and Florida, Georgia and Tennessee in the East. Then we decided the haves should play the haves and the have nots should play the have nots. That’s why LSU is playing Florida and Alabama’s playing Tennessee and Auburn’s playing Georgia. It makes sense”

As for the historical have nots, it was Mississippi State and Kentucky and Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

“Then we put Arkansas from the West and South Carolina from the East as permanent opponents because they were new to the league,” Dickey said. “Everybody thought that was fair, and most everybody still feel it’s fair. It also kept those big games that are close together that fans from both sides drive to – Tennessee and Alabama, Auburn and Georgia and Florida-LSU. Those have always been huge games for ticket sales.”

Thank you for your post. That was an education and really helps me understand the breakdown much better. Where we go from here will be interesting, but it makes more sense the rivalries after your post.

What happens in the next phase of expansion if the next two teams are from the western part of the Conference. If that happens then the most logical team to move to the East would be Auburn, would that end the AU vs UA rivalry ? I say let AU/GA/UA/TN play each other every year and let the rest of the teams rotate. It still ends up everybody playing 8 conference games.

great post the people need to realize that these "vague rivalries" built this conference. Uga vs Au started in 1892, the iron bowl and worlds largest outdoor coctail party are the SEC. You think OSU and Michigan need to play just every couple of years? Hell no, OU vs Texas every 3or 4 years? Another hell no. Just because school do not have rivalries now doesnt mean they cant create them, hell even Mizzou is already on board with beating arkansas arse every year lol, and mizzou and USCe are going to have the battle of Columbias, who knows in a few years they could be good games, LSU vs florida has produced great games, 97 for example florida was No. 1 and lsu gets em in death valley and beats them, sure am glad that wasnt vandy in town that night.

LSU played at Vandy the week before, LSU won 7-6 after Vandy went for 2. What a great game it was.

End sarcasm.
