Former South Carolina standouts Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery are voicing their support to rename the school’s wellness center, named after longtime U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, who served over 48 years in the Senate from 1956 to 2003. Thurmond was a segragationist and began his Senate career as a member of the Democratic party. He switched to the Republican party in the 1960s.
Wednesday afternoon, both Lattimore and Jeffery tweeted that Thurmond’s name should come off the wellness center because of his long-held beliefs.quote:

@MarcusLattimore
To celebrate well known segragationist Strom Thurmond’s legacy by keeping his name on our Wellness Center sends a contradicting message to our black students @UofSC. We can no longer be held back by those whose ideals represent division. We must continue to fight for equality.
The petition comes as South Carolina added a discussion about renaming buildings to its Friday meeting of the school’s board of trustees, though school president Robert Caslen has only specifically mentioned renaming a dorm for J. Marion Sims, a man who performed medical experiments on slaves.

Great start for a change in America. It won't cure racism but people like Strom Thurmond shouldn't be celebrated.

Does Clemson have a Strom Thurmond Building as well? I thought I remembered seeing one the one time I was on the campus.

Strom Thurmond went to Clemson. Why did we name it after him anyway...

If I remember correctly, the state government required him to donate money to USC instead of giving all of it to Clemson

I like how all these athletes are now historians

It’s not surprising that you and Marcus don’t understand historical context.
Tell me, what are your thoughts on Malcolm X?

I mean, he probably walked past it every day for 3-4 years.
And I forgot that he is on the staff now.

Their will be many more renaming of buildings in the near future. What sports stadium/arena will be renamed first? Rupp Arena?

Or the University could just admit the mistake and change the name, this isn't an econonmic conversation, it's a common fricking decency one.

If it truly mattered to Marcus and Alshon, then both individuals would have brought this issue up while they were still on campus. They sure didn't have a problem with the name on the building while they were both getting free tuition. A lot of these younger athletes are just being used as mouthpieces for someone else with an agenda. They need to both put forward the $$$ if they want to seriously change the name of the building. Don't just talk about it. This will lead universities and communities down a very dangerous path.

Lattimore and Jeffrey just checked the box to confirm their contribution to the black struggle.
Now they can back to living their lives as the upper 1%

Isn't he your Director of Player Development?
It seems like he may be a pretty good guide as to how an issue like this could affect recruiting in the future.

What are you implying? Because they play football for your school, they aren't smart enough to have an opinion?
