It's like the U.S. Military. Units that lose are roundly criticized within the ranks. Thus the black stripe (river) on the 1st Cav patch.
My Grandfather used to say about the 1st Cav patch: "The horse they never rode. The line they never crossed. And, well, the color is self-explanatory."
What is the specific incident they got the coward reputation from? Everyone else outside of Army always calls them 1st team, implying they're one of the best.

But they do give us indicators of how well a coach is relating to their players (getting them to play in the bowl), how well he's building the depth of the team (as backups play due to opt outs) and give us some information on the talent coming back the following year.
This is very true.
It's why Oklahoma fans should be extremely worried about next year. Their freshmen and sophomores looked terrible verses what should have been an easily overpowered Navy squad.
It's also why I feel good as an Ole Miss fan, our players aren't opting out like we see some teams. People give Lane hell but his players actually like him and the program as a whole.

Bowl games are meaningless and show nothing now. Half the teams aren’t playing the other half are back ups just happy to be on the field. Not much can be taken away from these shell of teams playing each other in non playoff games.

Yeah it actually speaks a ton about the condition of a program.
Take UGA and FSU as an example last year.
One team had mass opt outs and a pity party. The other team, UGA, had a coach and players who stood on pride.
We see the results a year later.
UGA had a winning culture fostered by the coaches and players. FSU, not so much.

Half empty stadiums galore - why the hell are we not having bowl games at either team's stadium? That would at least fill the seats. They just need to decide on how who gets home field advantage.

I did some quick googling on the topic and it appears 1st Cav (specifically 5th and 8th cav regiments) got embarrassed at the Battle of Unsan by the Chinese.

I can't recall the exact circumstances. I just remember that it happened in Korea during the battle around Ipsok and Unsan. My uncle fought in that battle and received a Purple Heart. He rarely talked about it, but if I remember correctly, a couple of the battalions were overrun after their ROK counterparts fell and the two BN units had to retreat.
I know the 1st Cav fought hard in Vietnam and had a very high casualty rate in their mission to regain the Division's honor.

The same shite happens every year without fail in SEC World.
SEC takes some embarrassing losses in Week 1 and Week 2. LSU always volunteers to go first. "This is looking like a down year in the SEC."
By the middle of October, it's "the SEC is a gauntlet and every team in the conference is the frigging '85 Chicago Bears."
SEC starts losing bowl games and "this was a down year in the SEC."
As a Texas fan looking in from the outside the last decade, the SEC always had the best conference if you only included the top three teams. It was never a guantlet. It had mid-tier and bottom-tier just like everyone else. But the top teams carried the load and created the buzz.
Still seems the same.

Who is "we"? I'm not going to claim any wins by schools that I didn't go to or aren't a fan of.
Plus, SEC has a shitty logo.

Playing on the road in the SEC still counts for something, especially at night. Make most of these teams play away from home, however, and they're not so great and wonderful.

I thought about this yesterday. If the two teams had moved here in 2021 when the move was announced the roles would most likely would have been reversed.
It was about timing.

What you were probably and understandably missing in that time were teams like UK who would finish 9th in the conference and would beat a team that finished 3rd in their conference.
The conference was dominating post season while most teams were "playing up".
This new bowl era is just a post season crap shoot.
