Last night is proof how media-driven the start of football season is.

It's all about hype. Drumming up interest by pumping up teams that really aren't that good.

South Carolina.... bad. (When will the media learn its lesson with this school?)

Vanderbilt.... bad.

Ole Miss.... not nearly as good as advertised. Bo Wallace is horrible.

This is why I hate the season of hype and prognostication, because it's all bullshite. Let the games begin. I expect that the big physical teams will rise to the top again, as they always do. Alabama, LSU, Auburn, maybe UGA (although they routinely disappoint). Florida's offense is not much better than Tulane's. What this conference needs is for the Tennessee of old to rear its head. The one that steamrolled people at the line of scrimmage. The East is garbage until that happens.

I agree, but it won't be this year it doesn't look like. They are the only team in college football over the last two years who don't return a single starter on either line of scrimmage.

It's the reason to chuckle at the folks who get so excited or bent by pre-season polls.
This board couldn't be more emblematic of it.

#9 vs #21 sounds a lot better and sells more newspapers and generates page clicks thank #21 vs unranked.

I enjoyed pretty much everything about the game last night, including the build up. I like getting excited about the first game, even if one team is a tomato can with an absentee coach.

Hype doesn't make a team better.

They've finished ranked higher than preseason the last three years.

They shouldn't even begin to rank teams until about week 5.

Last night is probably a bad example. Vegas, who doesn't pay much attention to media hype, had a pretty small line on the USCe/Aggie game. And I'm pretty sure the same with Vandy/Temple in Vandy's favor.

That said, we could do without an official poll until after the season starts.

I would like to see UT get back in the mix. However their schedule is truly a nightmare.

Certain schools can be trendy picks in the preseason. It's all fool's gold, brah.

FOOL'S GOLD!

South Carolina = underachieving wannabes

Ole Miss = runts

Vanderbilt = Vanderbilt

The line was 10.5 in USC's favor last night.

That's pretty substantial for two ranked teams

You really don't know much about SECw teams until the 1st 1/3rd of the season is over.

I thought it was smaller than that. Either way that just kind of further reinforces my point that it wasn't just a media assumption. Vegas doesn't just pull lines out of their arse based on who ESPN hyped in the off season.

Who cares. Long season. The best teams will get to the top after a while.

Yeah, what's it been, one time in the past nine years that we matched or went below the preseason ranking for SEC finishes?

LSU always handle the big games well. Its the medium level teams that they get upset by.
