It is truly amazing how LSU fans melt over the fact that the birthplace of Mardi Gras resides in the state of Alabama. It is History 101. They are straight out history deniers. There is no way they can be that dumb.

Pretty sure you guys are the dumb ones. If you could learn to read, you would know...........

The Spanish were the first Europeans to reach Alabama during their exploration of North America in the 16th century. The expedition of Hernando de Soto passed through Mabila and other parts of the state in 1540. More than 160 years later, the French founded the region's first European settlement at Old Mobile in 1702.[35] The city was moved to the current site of Mobile in 1711. This area was claimed by the French from 1702 to 1763 as part of La Louisiane.[36]

Ergo, Mardi Gras was started in La Louisiane when Mobile was in fact part of such.

But yea, keep thinking it's an "Alabama" thing. Your shite state wasn't even a state until the early 1800's....long after MG was created.

Do you baws claim stuff that happened in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota as "happening in Louisiana" because those areas were part of the Louisiana Purchase?

All I’m reading in this thread is that Mobile may have had a head start on Mardi Gras celebrations while under French sovereignty, and yet Mardi Gras celebrations there royally suck today.

Why brag about being the alleged first at something if you suck at it? Odd flex honestly.

Mobile has the original Mardi Gras.

Like everything else in Loozeyanna, even "their" cultural events are stolen

Wrong.

The first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Sieur de Bienville landed near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. They held a small celebration and dubbed their landing spot Point du Mardi Gras.

Besides which, they were celebrating Mardi Gras in France long before America was even discovered.

Again, Library Of Congress : Yes, Mobile, Alabama, is recognized as the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States, with the first celebration occurring in 1703. This predates New Orleans' celebration by over a decade.

Trumanfungs and Tom McD might need counseling after this thread is over. LOL.

And again, Point Du Mardi Gras was still the first ever Mardi Gras celebration, in 1699 in present day Louisiana. And the first real Mardi Gras parade started at Magazine and Julia in New Orleans in 1857. Facts are facts. Bye!

I wasn't referring to New Orleans Mardi Gras, I was referring to the first Mardi Gras on the continent which occurred in 1699 at Point du Mardi Gras, Louisiana. That was before either New Orleans or Mobile was founded.

Bayou Mardi Gras

1. Bayou Mardi Gras Marker
Inscription. [Click to hear the inscription.]
Across the Mississippi River from this marker is historic Bayou Mardi Gras, oldest place-name of other than Indian origin in the whole vast Mississippi River Valley *** On Tuesday 3 March 1699 Pierre le Moyne, Sieur D'Iberville, with his companions camped where the bayou- then 135 feet wide- entered the river. The day being the pre-Lenten holiday called Mardi Gras, he gave that name to both bayou and adjoining point of land *** The name, Bayou Mardi Gras ultimately disappeared from maps. It was replaced by "Bayou Plaquemine," and by "Fort Bayou" because of the proximity of Fort St. Philip (established by the Spanish in 1795) and of Plaquemine Point *** Meeting 28 January 1971, the Plaquemines Parish Commission Council officially restored the rightful designation, to be borne by that bayou forevermore, Bayou Mardi Gras.
