My son who is 12 said they better be ready for the fake. I said, son, it’s 4th and 11, they won’t fake it.... he looked at me like I’m an idiot.

Keep in mind, my son plays tourney baseball at a pretty high level. Has never played a down of tackle football. Knows basically nothing about it.

I coached football for 8 years....

Considering what was online, one of worst choices made late in a game of that magnitude.

I couldn't believe it when it happened, and if Georgia was looking at 4th & short, we could've forgiven that more so, but 4th & 11 made that decision such a terrible choice. Especially with Bama's D defending against a possible fake and if Georgia could've backed Bama inside 10. Who knows what would've happened, but one thing that would've most likely happened, Bama's offensive play-calling would've been different compared to taking over ball at 50 yard line. Bama's play-calling wouldn't have been the same, Bama OC's don't make such aggressive calls while staring down more field to go. Georgia coaches blew it!!! Their call made things much easier for Bama's offense coordinators and offensive players on their last drive.

This was worse than Clemson having their front players cheat to one-side during kickoffs in title game. Saban made one of best calls ever on the HUGE stage, with that onside kick call, but what we witnessed late night was the total opposite. Saban had sound logic behind his special teams call, Smart didn't have any logic behind his all that....

nowhere near even assigning a rank.

I know yesterday in the heat of the moment people lost their minds but if you actually think about it the decision was fine, although I don't like the play call whatsoever. Specifically, I mean having fields in when he is not normally on punt protection. I don't hate that we faked a punt and I don't hate that we went for it on 4th.

If it's successful, we can *hopefully* drain the clock and put the game away. If it fails, bama has to go a medium distance for a score. If you punt it, they have to go a longer distance but our "pin deep" punting was off all night and our defense was totally gassed late. Again, I'll buy in on it being a bad play call but I don't necessarily think going for it or even faking a punt was a bad decision. It's only bad becuase it didn't work. If fields doens't clam up and crap his britches and actaully takes his time and throws it (we had guys open btw) and we go down and score it's one of the best coaching decisions of all time.

Yeah. He would have been playing for overtime if he punted. He may have had a feeling abouy getting in to a OT shootout vs a Mobile Hurts.

Kirby said in the post-game presser that it was supposed to be a pass, but took to long to snap the ball. The intended receiver was uncovered then Ala defense spotted him and covered

I don’t think anyone could argue your point.

It's up there for sure. Insanely stupid. Only Led could pull that one off.

I'm not being hyperbolic here.

It was arguably the worst coaching decision I've ever seen on a major stage.

The call itself in the huddle is questionable AT BEST. Then seeing Bama come out in their standard defense and STILL RUNNING THE FAKE, was all-time fricking stupid.

All time.

Orgeron would have to move if he did that.

So there were 3 points of failure:

1. Calling the fake punt in the first place at mid-field with 11 yards to gain. Bad call, but not "all time" bad if the opponent wasn't ready.

2. Putting Fields in with the punt unit, thus signaling to the other team that you're faking it. Horrible call, approaching "all time".

3. Seeing that a Saban defense wasn't even playing the punt and were out there in their regular defense and STILL calling the fake punt with 11 yards to go and the game on the line and the other team with their backup QB in? Worst call I think I've ever seen.

It’s also bad because our defense was lined up in a regular formation. It’s notnlike we were in punt block formation. The percentages weren’t there at all.

It was an atrocious call.

I don't question the decision so much as the execution. All fake punt/FG plays have someone designated to call off the fake if the defense is not in the expected alignment. Bama was in a punt safe (i.e. their defense was still on the field).

It was definitely worse than Saban's fake punt call against UTx in the 2009 NCG, which for a long time I have felt was his biggest playcalling blunder.

But, it isn't in the neighborhood of how bad the Seahawks superbowl went. Having the ball "second-and-goal from inside the Patriots 1-yard line rather than hand the football to the monster known as Marshawn Lynch, who had already gouged New England for rushing 104 yards. Even if the Patriots managed to keep Lynch from scoring, Seattle had a timeout left to craft two more plays in the roughly 20 seconds that would be remaining."
