However, I (and many others) certainly never wanted a coach that lost to Navy, SMU, and Memphis as our head coach (didn't want O either but that's a whole other convo).

Their "eliteness" was very short lived. To hear them talk about it it's been that way forever. Really outside of 2003 and 2011...maybe 2007 but that was a bad national title team, they've been elite about as often as Auburn.
They think way way more of their program than everybody else does.

You left a little something out. One has a megalomaniac who doesn't let his assistants speak to the media and embarrasses them on national tv. And will limit the OCs credit for offensive success because of the dominant defense. Also his former assistants now head coaches are for the most part a bunch of losers.
