Because Saban retired a couple days beforehand. Bama didn't sit around for a month & a half waiting on Deboer's season to finish.

Memphis is likely to make the playoffs. Vandy has a good shot too. Will the Vols be the only program from Tennessee to sit at home this year? That's kind of embarrassing.

Simply put the pedal is all the way down on Ole Miss recruiting. There isn’t any more potential left to squeeze unless he builds it over the next decade or two.

Yet LSU and Florida roster still has more talent in spite of poor results. You see it in recruiting rankings, total talent composite rankings, and with your own eyes as there are individual flashes of brilliance. The coaches for both just lacked the ability to fully exploit what they had and they were fired for it.

The fact Alabama fans want Kiffin to stay at Ole Miss is further evidence that the ceiling is higher at Florida and LSU. They probably want Kirby Smart at Mississippi State too.

Remember that there was also "no chance" BK was fired this year

Number of times Vols have made the playoffs vs Ole Miss……

Vols are likely going 10-2 with the Vandy game being the play in game to the playoffs.

The Alabama job became vacant on January 10th. There were two days lost in recruiting. Still Alabama lost around 40% of their roster to the portal.

Losing 3 months of recruiting (both new and current players) will result in a blood bath for LSU’s roster.

LSU will wait till he's done. But they've probably already got the agreement.

As a Bama fan, I really don't care where Lane ends up. I'm rooting for him to string LSU & Florida along just to turn them down purely for the lulz.

Best case scenario is Lane trolls LSU:

Lane tells LSU he’s leaving for them after the playoffs. Then after all the other schools have hired new coaches and started recruiting guys……he says nah i changed my mind. LSU ends up screwed with all their top guys transferring and the best coaches and players to bring in are off the board

With Ole Miss basically being a lock for the playoff, I really don't understand how he can take another job. Their first playoff game, which will almost certainly be a home game, will be on 12/19 or 12/20. If they win that game, their next game will either be on 12/31 or 1/1. I can't see any realistic scenario where Kiffin leaves before the playoff, so are LSU and Florida going to sit and wait around until Ole Miss' season ends?

They didn't really have a choice with the timing, but Alabama's new coach was in the national title game 4 days before they hired him. How is this situation wholly different other than Saban waiting to announce his retirement until January 10? IMO, this gives UF/LSU/PSU time to at least speak through Kiffin's agent for months

Except, you can't. HS signing day is passed. Transfer Portal is nearly over or already over depending on how far the coach goes.

Who is going to keep the current kids on the roster? Whose going to sign new kids?

It's a pretty big problem that clearly wasn't considered when the new rules went into place.

what he meant was you can't think in the short term of next year when you're making an 8-10 year commitment for a coach. "They can get players later" means you don't need to worry so much about your 2026 roster when deciding who you want to hire. You need to think long-term

LSU or Florida or Penn State can make the playoffs most years under Kiffin. Why would he touch Ole Miss’s ceiling when that can be the norm at a better program?

Ole Miss won’t fire him for 9 win seasons.

The fear the rest of SEC has of this older, wiser version of Lane Kiffin coaching a program like Florida or LSU is palpable. They know he can turn those sleeping giants into monsters

This is going to happen regardless. It would be extremely stupid to make a hiring decision based on what 18-21 year olds might do.

They changed signing day and locked the portal down to one window. That's how it is different.
