Kentucky's committment to football

Is it possible for Kentucky to move up the SEC football standings? We've had a pretty good run the past half decade considering where we started. The fans are showing up. Kentucky has ranked in the top 25 in attendance the past 4 seasons. Is it just a matter of investing resources into the program (coaches, facilities, etc.) or is the history of the program to much to overcome? Has Kentucky reached its ceiling in regards to football success? Just looking for an outside point of view on the program. Be gentle.

It's a zero-sum game, that's why it's not paying dividends.

I think any SEC school is capable of being competitive in football. It just takes the right coaching staff that can coach and recruit and a fanbase that will show up to games, buy merchandise, and support their team no matter what.
Don't like people here such as Draconian (or whatever his name is) tell you otherwise. It may be tougher to get your foot in the door in the SEC, but it is still certainly possible.

I have always thought Kentucky could take another step up the football ladder. They should be able to get the money and fan support. I think they are at somewhat of a disadvantage vis-a-vis other SEC schools because of their location (further from the Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana recruiting grounds). I don't think UK will be consistently one of the top schools in the SEC in football, but I think they could be better, occassionally putting together a team that could make a run to get to the SEC championship game if things fall the right way.

The fact that even Bear Bryant lost 3-4 games there consistently tells you all you need to know.

Kentucky has been doing well for themselves recently. To get to the next tier, they will have to start winning 2-3 games more per year as well as actually beating decent teams multiple times a year. If they can do that, and hire a great coach after Joker, Kentucky could definitely move up. The problem is, USC may have beat you to the punch.

As well as Florida and Georgia on a regular basis. It seems like it's 3 automatic losses every year, w/ the exception of an upset of UGA here and there.

If SC can win the east, Kentucky can. The thing with SC is that they got a name coach and have some talented studs in state they got to stay home. I don't think Kentucky has as much talent in state as SC does, and obviously they haven't had a name coach. If they got a past their prime, formerly elite coach that could get some kids to go to UK they could make some noise.
Of course, SC also won the east while UGA, UF, and UT all had awful years at the same time. I doubt UK would ever be so fortunate.

The question really is, will they cover the spread tomorrow night?

They will definitely cover the spread. We won by 35 last season with Western racking up over 180 rushing. The defense should be much better this year now that Steve Brown is not calling the plays.

ETA: Looked it up: 25th last year and 22nd the year before. Surprises me a bit.

How will the offense do without Locke and Cobb? Cobb gave Auburn FITS the last two years.

I went to our game there in 08 which we lost in terrible fashion
Over half your fans had left before the 4th quarter had even started and missed the comeback win.
Most fanbases in the SEC wouldn't have done this. First on the list is to fix that problem IMO

The offense will probably struggle without Cobb and Locke in SEC play. Newton is much more talented than Hartline was and has some significant experience starting 10 games or so including 2 bowl games and wins over Georgia and Auburn so I expect to be fine there. There's also plenty of experience at WR although obviously not with Cobb's skills. The running game is a concern but the best offensive line in Lexington in a long time has to help.

Not even close. Getting the in-state guys to stay in state or not go to Clemson has been the key for our minute success over the past few seasons. Kentucky would have to start pulling some talent out of Ohio or something, because there really aren't any rich recruiting grounds like FL, GA, AL, or LA close by.

In any other conference, UK could be the next Mizzou or Louisville/WVU, Oregon, etc. In the SEC, in order for UK to rise up to a consistent contender, a consistent contender has to fall to mediocrity and that rarely happens. The Big 6 are so firmly entrenched in this league that there is not room for a program to "build up" to something.

We are proof of just how difficult it is to build up to something. It takes sustained winning, and even the first step of that is tough.

Not knocking USC at all but for them to win the East UF, UGA and UT all had terrible years and mediocre teams.
For KY to win the East, USC, UGA, UT and UF will have to be down in the same year. That's just tough to see happening.
Someone mentioned recruiting. I don't know how UK overcomes that and the fact that basketball is king in Lexington.

Kentucky has 2 conference titles, one with the best coach in the history of the game and the other while cheating our asses off. So that level of success is out of reach.
