If kentucky scheduled a football game and a basketball game at the same time there'd be no KY fans at the football game. Juxtaposed with the same two events occuring at Alabama, Auburn, Georgia or LSU there'd be no one at the basketball game. The fans mindset in KY on is orange bouncy things not oblong brown things

...somehow that doesn't sound right

Is it possible for Kentucky to move up the SEC football standings? We've had a pretty good run the past half decade considering where we started. The fans are showing up. Kentucky has ranked in the top 25 in attendance the past 4 seasons. Is it just a matter of investing resources into the program (coaches, facilities, etc.) or is the history of the program to much to overcome? Has Kentucky reached its ceiling in regards to football success? Just looking for an outside point of view on the program. Be gentle.

Fire Joker Phillips and hire Mike Leach. Only way IMO.

I often wonder how history would've been different had Kentucky retained Bear Bryant instead of Rupp.

The answer is in your thread title. Commitment. From a fan of a school experiencing recent first-time success, that's what it takes: commitment from wallets, more than anything.

We have always had extremely good fan support, but it takes much more than that. Up until AD Hyman's arrival, we had no form of seat license fee at all. ZERO. In ANY sport. The only other school in the SEC without one at the time was Vandy, and that's because they don't have an Athletic Department. Once more dollars started rollling in, facilities were immediately upgraded, baseball stadiums were built, parking lots were refurbished, and TONS of improvements were made to the locker rooms, etc. Once the facilities were upgraded, recruiting was upgraded, particularly with in-state talent. This is the same talent that use to leave SC for the UGAs, UFs, FSUs, Bamas, etc, but now they're staying home. We have experienced immediate success, and that success will continue to sustain as long as we remain finacially committed to being competitive and not complacent.

And it all started with a little more monetary commitment.

My opinion is that Kentucky fans don't care about the program enough. Until the fans pressure the administration to care, nothing will change.

In any other conference, UK could be the next Mizzou or Louisville/WVU, Oregon, etc. In the SEC, in order for UK to rise up to a consistent contender, a consistent contender has to fall to mediocrity and that rarely happens. The Big 6 are so firmly entrenched in this league that there is not room for a program to "build up" to something.

that is the arkansas or south carolina problem - the problem at kentucky is not just that ... it is also that they are a school that cares much more about basketball than football

it is just more appealing to play football at a school where football is the #1 sport

Conventional, old-school wisdom at best.

That "problem" is in the process of rectifying. It takes a while, see Upastate's comment's above as well as mine.

They will definitely cover the spread. We won by 35 last season with Western racking up over 180 rushing. The defense should be much better this year now that Steve Brown is not calling the plays.

OOOOOOOOOPS,

It's all good. First game jitters, or something...

Half our roster is from GA FWIW. With quite a few players from Florida.

Our defense was/is better than last year, all things considered. Bobby Rainey is one of the best RB's in the nation. No joke. I won't make any excuses for our offense, however.

Fan support is not the problem. We have better fan support than than most sec schools considering our mediocre history. It is ridiculous to say a team that is in the top 25 in attendance every year with an average sized stadium has fan support issues. Just because we are the one of the best basketball programs in history does not mean we don't care about football. Star power and recruiting are not major issues anymore either. I think the major issue since joker took over is his conservative approach. There was no reason not to throw for a td after that 58 yard run. Trying to run it up the middle when it hasn't worked all night was the worst possible call.

I think the basketball team would've looked better if they had played last night.

That game might have been the worst game of the year, and it was only opening night. I doused myself in gasoline, but I couldn't find a match.
