I had no idea this was a big deal for Kentucky fans, but apparently a lot of them don't care for the checkerboard look.

Nike says it is based on Secretariat silks and has nothing to do with UT, but it does seem a bit like they assumed they could just lump them in with their neighbor to the south and some folks have caught on. What says the 3-4 KY fans on the board?

Their royal blue and white looks best. Ditch the tacky checkerboard on the sleeves and stop with the gimmicky black uniforms.

I would like to know the real stories behind the checkerboard as well. I just assumed all these years people in both states were too remedial to learn chess.

I do know that UT-Knoxville's checkerboard is based off of their main building on campus. It supposedly has a checkerboard design at the top of the bell tower.

I know I’m in the minority but I’ve always liked these uniforms when they wear them at night.

People will cry because they aren’t traditional, but who cares? It’s Kentucky. Still remember that game where JoJo Kemp ran all over South Carolina in that uniform.

ETA: It’s crucial they wear them at night. They look awful during the day. The chrome reflects the blue sky or the green grass and messes up everything. At night it’s a silver/black mix and looks great.

To each his own. I think they look like a low-rent group of five team in those.

I don't mind them with the white jerseys but don’t think they look good on the Blue or anthracite ones.

I guess our AD had a hand in bringing the checkerboard look to UK and has gotten pissed in the past when asked about them.

I like all of our uniforms. I don’t mind the checker boards, but wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they went away. I actually don’t care for the chrome domes, though. I like the matte metallic blue. I can tolerate the black, but only for night games. Coolest uniforms were from year's ago when there were circles on the shoulders similar the the LA Rams unis. Cats had a throwback game when we played Ohio back in the Rich Brooks days. We lost that friggin game, so we’ll probably never see them again. LOVED that look.

FTR, Kentucky had checkerboard end zones 30 yrs before Tennessee. But yes, it's a hot button issue amongst the fan base.

I honestly don't care one way or the other about them on the unis. What I do care about is that abortion of a logo Nike has tried to trot out to sell new merchandise. Two birds fawking. Cmon now.

Kentucky had checkerboards before UT. I think they look good on some of the uniforms. Much better than the 1996 denim.

Tennessee is much more commonly associated with the checkerboard however.

They could wear clown suits if they were as good as Alabama and I would be happy.

This is correct. Before the stadium additions, you could clearly see the top of Ayres Hall from the field. I believe there was a coach who would tell his players to run to the checkerboards and then it became a part of our tradition.

UK was the first to use checkerboards, stemming from the patterns used in horse racing. However, its pretty clear at this point that UT successfully co-opted that and now "owns" it.
