Kentucky reached the midway point of the 2020 football season and pressed the reset button on its quarterbacks.

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup at Kroger Field with the current owners of the SEC East, Georgia, the Wildcats will explore options at quarterback. There was an “or” listed between Terry Wilson and Joey Gatewood’s names on the depth chart.

“We’ll see how it goes throughout the week,” Mark Stoops said Monday. “Haven’t had the opportunity to meet with those guys with Sunday being a day off. We have our meetings coming up, so we’ll see where everything is after a couple of days.”

Apparently, Wilson sat out today's practice with a "minor injury" allowing both Gatewood and Beau Allen to get snaps. Stoops also suggested Allen is in the mix for PT as well.

quote:

The quarterback competition is not limited to just Wilson and Gatewood. Stoops said that true freshman Beau Allen is “in the mix” to earn that starting role. What’s holding Allen back isn’t his play on the field. “That part of it is tough because all of the quarterbacks need the reps. They need the looks. That’s where it gets — there’s a fine line there with running our receivers into the ground, but also getting the looks for the quarterbacks at game speed. It’s hard getting three quarterbacks looks but he (Allen) has been impressive. I’ve said that from the beginning. He’s a guy that definitely has some great ability, anticipation and can throw the ball. We’ll see where it goes. It’s hard to get three guys ready, but yes he is in the mix.”

Will any of it really matter with Eddie Gran calling the plays? Probably not. But its a start, I suppose.

That loss vs Mizzou is on Stoops
and or the OC.

Why in the world do you come out throwing the ball? Your OL absolutely owned the UT DL and Missouri's wasn't as good and had
guys banged up.

No excuse for that loss

If you have two qbs then you don’t have any qbs.

I beg to differ, a few games removed from a season with literally no QB.

In all seriousness, I don't know how much it matters other than maybe Gran will trust Gatewood or Allen more to sling it and there's a off chance they might be more accurate. Either one is going to struggle against UGA, so it's not likely we'll see success in their first start if its not Wilson. And our WRs are asstastic.

Gatewood's ability to pass could keep UGA honest and give the wildcats a better shot at winning.

Start Terry against Georgia, not going to win anyway.

Then let Gatewood and Allen battle it out for the rest of the season.

I haven't seen anything from Gatewood that screams to me he needs to be starting instead, but the offense has been anemic thus far this season. We've got try something. I think our receivers share a pretty healthy portion of the blame

He needs to simplify the playbook.

He can take those RPO pages and shove em up his arse.

Funny part is Terry isn't even that bad of a passer. He throws a pretty accurate ball and our guys have been dropping em. Terry admittedly takes way to long to read a defense sometimes but when we've gone hurry up he's been lights out. Run the damn ball and give Terry some simple read passing plays to keep em honest. Instead he's back there doing fricking calculus reading the defensive end and the safety at the same time trying to figure out if he should hand it off, run it himself, throw it or if his orders ready at fricking Chipotle.

Belle - you got it. I'm firmly convinced Kentucky did what they did last year because enough people got hurt to give Eddie Gran AND Mark Stoops no other option but to do the obvious.

I don't understand Stoops. He WANTS so badly to be a 3-1 Run/Pass team, but he gives Gran this leash to do such stupid shite. And they refuse to use C-Rod even though Rose does dumb thing after dumb thing.

In some ways, it doesn't matter. Next year, enough graduated off that line where it all takes a big step back. A couple years after that, Stoops is gone. And after that, I guess we'll talk about how Kentucky was almost relevant in the SEC. The young kids won't believe it.

This could be Gatewood's first start at QB in his life

I don't think Stoops wants to be that team but we have to get the passing game going for more than 100 yards a game. Missouri based on its previous games should have been a good candidate. Why he didn't establish the run first so that play action and RPO might be more effective first I dunno.

Lol, they got beat by a better team goofball. They couldn’t run for shite either, they just got their arse kicked. “Inexcusable loss”...lol you are a dipshit

As for the QB competition. Absolutely, Wilson sucks. He made 1 good throw all game. Bad part is, Gatewood didn’t look very good either

Couldn't run my arse. Rose averaged over 8 yards a carry and Rodriguez averaged 5.3.

Jesse - they did. Better coached and better motivated. Not trying to minimize the effort by the Tigers at all. Just trying to understand how Kentucky seemed so disinterested.

I was not surprised at the Mizzou win. But I was surprised at the complete lack of effort and execution on the offensive side of the ball.

Yep, spot on. We would have won easily had we just ran the ball down their throats early and wore out their defense. Stoops/Gran really messed that opportunity up.
