Yea I know. I mean we could have the ability to bring in top talent year after year after year after year and have no better than 3rd in the SEC WEST to show for it. Who did I just describe?

Why yes, they were ranked AP No. 8. I forgot they had the worst season ever for a team that started in the top 10, thanks for bringing that up.

We were number 10, the very next year Florida did exactly the same thing and even lost to an FCS school. We aren’t alone :(

Does anyone actually get depressed over sports? I’ve never once thought “damn I’m depressed I’m
a Gamecock fan”

And trust me I’ve had plenty of opportunities

John L wasn't a bad guy but this instance should go down in sec lore as one of those "perfect storm" moments of just how bad it can really get.
All because mercenary Petrino put his whore on the company payroll.

From an outsider’s perspective, I can definitely see why everyone laughs at JLS and why Arkansas hired him.

From an Arkansas fan perspective, it made total sense at the time. JLS had head coaching experience at major college, had mentored Bobby Petrino,
was already on the coaching staff, the timing of transition was horrible in that no one is leaving their team in April/May after new contracts just kicked off. It really was a perfect shite storm. Petrino ruled the team with intimidation and once that was gone the team fell apart before the season even started. Couple that with JLS bankruptcy issues and personal matters (brother died), it was just a season to forget.

The spring of 2012 was a fun time to listen to Finebaum. I had been laid off and was doing some work on my deck and had it on as background noise. The whole Louisville vs Kentucky matchup in the Final Four, John L Smith and Petrino drama at Arkansas, and of course the occasional dig at LSU for 21-0.

Oh man, how I loved having John L. Smith as head coach at Arkansas. It was a fun time, following what Houston Nutt did to Ole Miss the previous year.

After Bobby Petrino took Arkansas to their promised land of consistent mediocrity, tragedy struck Razorback nation. The one competent coach that was somehow convinced to come to Fayetteville temporarily lifted Arkansas above consistent bottom-feeder status, and then tragedy struck.

Yea, Jeff Long screwed that program beyond recognition. He should have been fired as soon as he decided to meet with the BOT regarding Petrino.

Watching someone unravel week by week is a horrible thing. By all accounts John L. is a fairly nice guy but he just can't handle a high pressure job. You saw it at Michigan State and then again at Arkansas. Other then the nice pay day he got out of it Jeff Long did not do Smith any favors by giving him that job.

In our defense John L. Smith had some great success at his other coaching stops before Arkansas, in order to maintain the system we had with all of the returning players we kept him and it honestly wasn't a bad move, it didn't turn out well, but the man was a proven commodity before falling out at Michigan St
