Only time will tell. I've only discussed history in this thread, Alabama and LSU have both been in the upper teir of the conference from the beginning, way back in 1934 to today.

I could say Alabama is only top teir right now because of Saban too. Y'all were averaging 5 losses a year from 2000-2007. Y'all could be a "Tennessee" right now for all we know.

The thing is you were always coming back though, just like you always have. LSU was always coming back too, just like we always have. Not as frequently as Bama, but as frequently as all but 8 or 9 programs in the country.
Could we have a down stetch? Sure who knows, we'll be back though. And in 30 years the all time rankings won't look too much different IMO

If having a winning record vs Bama for any team that has regularly played Bama for decades is the barometer of being a top program, there are no top programs. What team having played Alabama more than 5x since the 1800s has a winning record vs Bama?

Herman would be a fool to take the Texas job. Too many bosses to run the football team the way he would want.
LSU, ok job, better than Texas.
USCw would be the job to take if he was given control of the football program.

Actually you're wrong. The climate had to change before LSU could hire Saban and make him the highest paid coach at the time.

Saban was the product of the changing mindset at LSU, not the other way around.

I do find it interesting to look at all programs side by side historically, IMO there is something to be taken from trends.

If you are interested in the full list:

^ decades for this publication go 1-10, rather than 0-9. So Auburns 2010 title counts towards 2000s not 2010s

Reason multiple teams are at 14th between 1900 and 1930: national rankings only go up to 128, in those early decades there were a lot of no-name schools today that had decent programs back then. If you weren't ranked top 128 it defaulted to 14th

I believe LSU was ranked #1 in one poll in 1962 (9-1-1), 13-0 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Why do we own A&M?

Must be embarrassing to be owned by a average program

My line of thought is that Saban being hired not only changed LSU going forward but the SEC as well. What he did at LSU and continued at UA created higher expectations for all programs in the conference. No more of just having a great season was winning 10+ games, beat your rival, and a New Years Bowl with the opportunity to compete for the SECC. Now that is not a good season at all because Saban has raised the bar. Example UGA just fired CMR and what happened to Miles. It like the saying trying to keep up with the Jones. Top tier programs in the conference want the same thing Saban is doing at UA. Whether LSU changed the climate I do not believe LSU or anyone could have predicted the Saban factor that we have now.

Top coaches I think see LSU as a premier destination to coach for resources, instate talent, and everything else, but many of them do not want to have to meet expectations of the fan base coupled with the boosters of doing what Saban did in 3 years after taking over UA.

My opinion if Saban announced this as his last year in CFB LSU would have their choice of who would be their next HC.

You're 100% correct.

I can't believe some gargoyles are arguing this. Sid E Walker's assertion that 1970 is part of the 1960s is utter nonsense.

1970-1999 = 30 years. As you said, LSU had 3 top-10 finishes in the AP Poll during those decades. Also, LSU had 4 top-10 finishes in the Coaches' Poll during that time frame.

LSU also had 10 top-15 finishes in the AP Poll and 9 top-15 finishes in the Coaches' Poll during those decades.

LSU did just as much if not more for Saban than he did for LSU.

I think that's true to some degree. It worked both ways together, and Saban really got his process going with LSU. I think that time is still very special to him.

We were a shite show in the 90's. Horrible, political management. I guess we will see what kind of prorgram we are. I think at this point in time LSU has a ton to offer a Head Coach. Tons of cash availabe for facilities and more importantly staff, ridiculous recruiting where you have a massive leg up going into the house.

Look, prior to Nick, LSU had no more national relevancy than a Colorado or Clemson. Occasionally win a conference title; occasionally go to a major bowl game. But in those days, only a couple games a week were televised nationally. So unless you were consistently vying for NCs or appeared in NY Day bowls you just weren't real well known. Plus, the national media back then (the networks) were centered in the northeast. A southern school that wasn't particularly accomplished simply wasn't nationally relevant.

Dinardo started the trend of brining Louisiana's top prep stars to LSU with Kevin Faulk. It was not Nick Saban that is responsible for that. Dinardo had some success but had a poor DC. Cost him his job. Saban came in and took the recruited talent and improved the facilities. Saban coaching at LSU was not as good as Saban coaching for Alabama; he always had one eye on the NFL. Saban brought LSU to national prominence. Les Miles came in took what Saban did and brought LSU even higher with another National Championship, two SEC championships and an undefeated regular season which had not happened since (1950s). With the talent in the state, the infrastructure that LSU has, there is no way this is not a top job in the country. Klatt is wrong and it does not matter what the history is in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. By the estimate, ND is the best job in the country.

It's just click bait for a moron. Nothing more.
