What makes you think he was so good? LSU fans have always complained about JH's play by play.

WHAT "LSU fans" ????? 50 posters on a random message board ?????, or ALLLLLLLLLL of the hundreds of thousands of LSU fans around the globe ??????
I have liked Hawthorne from the beginning, not just because of his announcer voice, but that he puts in twinges of emotion and homerism and excitement. The few mistakes he has made - compared to the monumental number of big, small, trivial and important pieces of information he has had to broadcast have NEVER bothered me.

Happy retirement Jim.

Is this truly news worthy of other schools besides LSU?

He's a true LSU fan first and gets excited like all of us.

But he's got a great radio voice and has called some very memorable moments in LSU history.

That he's been doing it for so long probably makes it noteworthy to fans from other schools. When Jack Cristil (sp?), long time State broadcaster, passed away it was cool reading posts from fans of other schools.

I think ol' school of PBP started before most of the games were televised. They were tasked with "showing" the games through radio, capturing the pathos of the moment one play at a time. They were true masters.

When I think of summer, the immediate response is minding and smelling a grill, nursing a cold beer, and listening to Jim Hawthorne call Tiger Baseball games. On Saturdays and Sundays, on the car or in the yard, his voice was there...

I'm 36 and my Dad recently turned 60, and it's so strange that the way I'm describing Hawthorne coloring my summertime memories is the same way he speaks about John Ferguson's voice being a part of his Fall Saturday nights. Way before the days of every game on TV...

A page of life being leafed through for me. Whether you liked him or disliked him...he's a memory we will all share and think of LSU when we do...I'll miss him.

Jim is like a crazy old uncle to us LSU fans.

He's been the voice of the Tigers my whole life. I can't imagine saturdays with him not in the booth.

Hawthorne was awesome. Probably should have retired a decade ago though. In his heyday, he was as good as any.

LSU fans always complain about everything all of the time. It's what they do.
LSU fans are the most irrationally negative people in the world.

Just consider that JH covered all 3 major sports and was the administrator over the entire LSU media dept. His consecutive game streaks speaks to the fact that broadcasting LSU games in all 3 sports, back to back to back each season/year, for 30+ yrs was not a job for him. Add up all the plays over 4 quarters of a football game, all the plays in 2 halves of a basketball game, all the innings in a 9 inning baseball game, all covering 30+ plus yrs.How many live calls is that? And people will say he missed some? He will be sorely missed by all who follow LSU.

Hawthorne is terrible but it's mostly because he's old/cant see and just burnt out.

He had a great career but he should have retired 5 years ago.
