When I was growing up it was an oddity to have your team on TV more than a time or two a year, football or basketball. Got to hear lots of good ones on clear channel stations. Paul Eells at Vandy (before he went to Arkansas) was on WSM 650, John Ward at Tennessee on WSIX 980 which bled into Knoxville's WNOX 990, Cawood Ledford of Kentucky on WHAS 840, John Ferguson of LSU on WWL 870 and Larry Munson of Georgia on WSB 750.
Good stuff.
Good stuff.

IMO, Ward and Bill Anderson were the best radio tandem in the SEC.

Yea, Kesling isn't too good at football. I think he does a pretty good job at basketball though.
I used to like Kesling on JP before he took the UT job.
That seems to be the universal opinion on Kessling from fans. Good at basketball but hasn't been good at football. He does ok on things like JP or any partial commentary type gig but he doesn't have it when it comes to football. TV is his element not radio.
One thing I loved about Ward is that he made it exciting, even when the other team was scoring it was exciting.

Kessling tries but he's not very good at football. In fact, he's pretty bad at it imo though he has his moments. But Kessling butchers names like nobody's business and 'cheggerboards' instead of 'checkerboards' is annoying as hell.
Kessling is drunk in the booth.

Now our current Lady Vol's Basketball announcer is AWESOME. I don't know who he is but I chanced on to listening to him once last year and really enjoyed it -- he made it exciting and I don't really listen to basketball whether it's our men or our women. I wish Kessling brought half the excitement that guy did (sorry don't know his name).
You're talking about Mickey Dearstone. He's a damn good announcer, but his radio show is awful.

I'm kinda sad. He's called 2 FB NC's, 6 College World Series championships, & 3 Final Fours

lol, it's a fact, he's just not that good. He can't remember names for shite, and consistently calls athletes by the wrong name. Also, he has the unique ability to convince you that every baseball that is hit in the air "has a chance".

I remember listening to the 2010 LSU-UNC game on the radio on the way back from our game to the river house. We were way out in the boonies almost into Mississippi. Couldn't pick anything up. But I could barely pick up WWL, so I listened to the whole 4th quarter, which was one monumental LSU f' up after another. Man, I thought Hawthorne was gonna throw a damn chair onto the field.
Then this year's game with MSU I listened to the first half on the way back to Birmingham. He was just basically like "MSU just whippin the tigahs right now, just whippin um" for 2 straight quarters.
Called it like he saw it.

Oh I know. I think football's length versus basketball's and the press box privacy and culture in football gives him far too much time to get soused. FWIW, Kesling has ALWAYS had a drinking issue and has been an utter a-hole to people because of it.

Thanks for the info. I think they should give him a shot if Kesling ever needs a fill-in (I have no hope that he'll be replaced unless he chooses to retire so a fill-in is probably Dearstone's best chance of showing what he can do). Maybe if he knocks it out of the park in such a circumstance, audience pressure will mount (yeah I know - dream on).

Some Alabama folks have a similar feeling with Eli and Chris Stewart (who does basketball and baseball).
I like Stewart ok though I think he drifts towards Rod Bramlett homer/whiner territory sometimes, but not to extremes.

What makes you think he was so good? LSU fans have always complained about JH's play by play.
