So basically it’s a lot like most southern cities

You prefer it to the watermark?
I’ve not stayed there. I’m a Marriott guy so I try to stick with the brand best I can.

I’d prove you wrong but then you would realize I’m not rich
Well done

Definitely the nicest hotel in Baton Rouge
I stayed there before. It’s ok. But I’ve stayed at several nicer ones in Nola.

Look - Baton Rouge is an industrial town but it also has a lot of really nice areas with beautful old oak trees. I live in a very nice neighborhood in Dallas and go to BR several times a year to visit my kids (in school there) and my perspective is that it isn't any more dangerous than most (particularly Southern) cities of its size. But I'm also not a huge pussy that is afraid of cities like a lot of people seem to be these days.
I don't get the downtown comment at all. Late at night it might get a bit rough but I've stayed at the Capitol Hilton/Watermark/Airbnbs in the vicinity multiple times and walked the area late without being remotely afraid.
The have/have not areas of town is something applicable to literally every single city in this country. I'm sure as hell not suggesting that BR is a top 10 US city or something ridiculous like that, but it isn't nearly as bad as some on this board make it out to be.
And whoever said that Austin is the best city in the conference is 100% correct, even if it's getting worse by the day with the shitty transients/tech-bro scumbags. It's the prettiest, has the most things to do (including Nashville), best economy (despite current challenges), proximity to the Hill Country/San Antonio and not far from Dallas/Houston, etc. It's got a ton of built-in advantages.

The watermark is an autograph collection by Marriott property downtown 2-3 blocks off the river on third street I think.
If you like other autograph properties you would probably enjoy this one as well.
Personally the art at some of the autograph locations I've been to looks like it was chosen by a very wealthy serial killer, but the properties themselves are usually outstanding.

I’ve been living in the middle of Baton Rouge for 16 years and don’t even lock the doors to my house. My car keys are usually inside the unlocked car. But according to SEC rant I shouldn’t be alive because of the danger.
Drug dealers in the hood don’t have an effect on my life here.

Just in general. Everyone is going to have their own preferences between small urban town vs. big city, but Austin offers more than every other city. It’s really not much of a debate. People will complain about transplants and rightfully so, but Nashville on average has just as many from Ohio and Indiana.

I used to stay at that Renaissance all the time and its a very nice hotel, especially considering its 15 years old at this point.
I also really like the Watermark downtown. Also part of Marriott and owned by the same guy.

It is like most major cities...a very poor area, a middle class area, and a rich area....as long as you stay away from the very poor areas in most cities you will be just fine. Also...do not get lost in ATL during the SEC title game like we did in 06...can get very scary, very quickly without a GPS.

Man I have walked through new orleans projects by mistake after a sugar bowl all hammered.
Atl dont scare me.

It is not the nicest BR hotel. I like Watermark. But I have seen Eagle 17 at the Renassiance for 22 a pour.

Were you under the impression is was a giant slum with 750,000 people living like rats? There are lots of nice areas. Just like any other mid-size city. Nice parts and not nice parts. Go to Lousiana Lagniappe and get the red fish papillote. If you like bourbon, head over to the Houmas House Plantation down the road in Gonzales. Tell them you are headed to their bar on the property. Cool small place with a shocking number unicorns. The restaurant is also top notch.

Well, being an Istrouma Sr. High guy. Yes there is a HUGE difference in North Baton Rouge and any other part if the city.

I disagree with Austin being the nicest city and of course beauty is different for each viewer of it but Austin seems like lots of concrete with no trees or aesthetic beauty. No history and simply not that interesting of a place honestly. West of Austin in the hill country is nice to visit so if places nearby count then it helps but I would simply rather go to those places.
