But sure, you can throw in the "patriotism" thing as well.
We have the right to free speech in this country, and that is what these players are exercising their rights by doing this.
Fine. But those people have the same right to express displeasure of the players political statements that they disagree with, don't they?
The players are making a statement about how black people have been treated by the police. That's fine and I understand this. But disrespecting the flag is an ineffective way to do this.

Before I retired I avoided conversations about politics at work. It does nothing but cause trouble and create divisiveness. It makes doing the job much more difficult. The players should take their activism to a different forum.

I want singers to sing. Actors to act. And football, baseball and basketball players to play their sports. I don't care about their political opinions. We watch sports to escape politics and problems in the world and the players are forcing these issues on our only escape. So, if people want to escape those issues by not watching the game then they have the right to do so.

1. I don't want to argue with you about symbolism, but Key wasn't writing about the military. He was writing about the "flag still standing" which is symbolic of America.

2. None of that matters anyway because we're talking about what the anthem IS, not why it was written. The players aren't protesting a poem from 1814. They're protesting things about America.

This conversation is a microcosm of exactly what I was talking about in my original post.

Sorry bud I can't help you with that kind of logic. The words in the song are exactly about the attack on Ft. McHenry to say that not about the military, the country, the flag and the beginnings of this nation is just trying to move the subject into another directions. I know what your doing you do not want to identify the origins and source of the material cause you know that you wont win the argument on those grounds.

Honestly the fact that none of the people kneeling probably know the true meaning of the words and what they represent is the main reason why they disrespect that flag and that's just sad on so many levels.

If the broadcast starts at 6, tune in at 6:05 and you've missed all the bullshite. This isn't complicated.

They can escape those issues by tuning in after the national anthem (which has no reason to be played anyway).

The flag still standing because the military was holding it's ground during a bombardment. It was written during war time about a military clash, and our military's ability to persevere....which in turn symbolized out country's ability to persevere. Read the words.

So what is the point of doing this? Look. We can agree to disagree....but wouldn't you say that, at best. their message is being garbled and misunderstood, thereby making it ineffective?

Dude, I don't know who you are, but give me a break. I'm not going to argue with you about this, because I see that you aren't capable of understanding what I'm saying.

I couldn't care less if people stand, sit, or kneel, and I have no agenda to push. What you want to believe is irrelevant to my opinion. You can carry on believing that somehow players are disrespecting the military, specifically, if you want. But, those of us with a brain and know that the protests have nothing to do with the military. They're about perceived racial injustices. You can agree or disagree with their cause, but you should at least try to understand what it is.

And, I'm not going to answer whatever convoluted reply you make, because, like I said, you can't, or don't want to understand.

Imagine people making it a complete day of Television watching to watch the pregame show and then having to turn their TV off because some players want to turn it into a political statement.

If they want to make a statement, I get it. but they don't have to do it at a football game. I have no doubt a television station would broadcast a program with some of the biggest stars of football to talk about their issues. Crap, we suffer through the "People's Choice Awards", "Crisley Knows Best", "The Kardashians" and any number of other crap on TV.

Here is my thing. if they are so offended and on board with this message, what are they doing during the off season? They are so fired up about this issue they are willing to do a meaningless gesture only when it does not cost them time or money.

It's a-fricking-mazing how many people don't understand that the national anthem isn't an ode to the military. That has been the most baffling thing to me in the whole kneeling fiasco.

This is what we have been talking about and discussing.
I am simply arguing that I think it is amazing how you believed this.

Then choose those three minutes to take your last piss break, refil, etc. before the game actually starts. If you're boycotting over that, then you were just looking for something to be pissed about.

Or the players can stand respectfully. Hey. It works both ways. If the players want to protest, let them protest. If people want to protest by not watching then let them protest by not watching.

I didn't watch. I have as much right to protest as the players do.

ETA
I also don't feel like I missed anything important, and didn't miss the game as much as I thought I would. Truthfully? I might not watch the NFL anymore at all, because I don't "need" it.

Kneeled or knelt? I guess either is correct.

Never said you didn't. I just think it's a dumb thing to protest.

but I don't. I think it is the very thing to be protested. Hey, the NFL ratings w=suffered all season, for whatever reason. They could have circumvented this problem if they had just held the players in the locker room during the National Anthem. College football does.

Average at best. But I typically watched the Falcons, and had a Super Bowl Party at the house last year.

But with ratings being down, it would appear as if a lot of people felt the same way. Leave political statements out. It adds nothing to the game, and has apparently hurt the NFL. If it continues, and ratings continue to slide, it will be tough sledding for the new network contract negotiations. People tuning out will be more effective than kneeling.

They should stop playing the national anthem. It has nothing to do with the game.

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, who also raised his fist during the National Anthem this past season, told CNN on Monday that he intends to skip the White House visit.

"Nah, I personally do not anticipate attending," Jenkins told CNN's "New Day."

Wide receiver Torrey Smith, who also raised his fist on the field to express solidarity with the "Black Lives Matter" movement, expressed his disapproval of Trump's war against players who take a knee during the national anthem to protest racism.

Doesn't exist.

What are they protesting the fact that;

The single motherhood rate in the black community went from 20 percent to 70 percent during the civil rights era. Is America more racist now than the 1960's and if so please explain how that happened?

Why are black kids not graduating high school at a high percentage?

Why are black kids shooting each other in significantly higher rates then any other ethnic group?

Why is 13 percent (black) of the population is responsible for over 50 percent of the murders.

The fact is according to statistics studies at John Jay College if you are a white man in a similar confrontation with the policy, you have a better chance of being shot by police then if you are young black man?

More white people are shot by the police in this country then black men.

Correct but with freedom comes responsibility and does not include freedom from consequences.
