They didn't. The FWAA title is very legitimate. It doesn't carry the clout that the AP or ESPN(Coaches),formerly UPI does, but it is very well respected. Arkansas won this after 1964 and celebrated as such.

Now,that's not to say the FWAA hasn't had some curious 'champions',either. How they could vote 9-1-1 Iowa over 11-0-0 LSU in 1958 is beyond me. Same for naming 8-0-1 Ohio State "co-champ" with 11-0-0 Alabama in 1961.

But an FWAA title isn't one where some SID fumbled through some old magazine and said"hey, look at this!"

UPI,AP,BCS, those are the ones I consider legit. If your team has one of those there is no debating in my opinion.

The titles awarded before these were active are always debatable.

I agree that the FWAA is somewhat of a respectable organization at naming championships, however would you consider it the top 2 polls of its era.

When the national media came out and declared a champion that year, was it Arkansas?

Okay. But by that standard 5 of Alabama's just went down the drain.

i dunno how people don't understand arky didn't win in 64

In '64, the voting ended before the playing ceased. We beat both Texas and Nebraska that season and were undefeated. That's why.

that was the standard then tho

if you go back and look at the major championship winners there are a lot of examples of those who ended up losing their bowl game.

This was not a mistake tho... this was how the system was run back then... the bowl game was essentially a post season exhibition game

I do think it is better now but you can't change the rules after the fact... and to change the rules in 64 because you don't like the result is just that

only by the standard that gives LSU seven national championships... which is to say... by no reasonable standard

In the AP and UPI/Coaches era those are really the only championships most people consider

The Bryant Museum is opened 9-4 daily. You can come and see the 1964 AP trophy anytime.

That would be nice for sure.

Bama will be tough but I have faith in our staff and team. Can season get here soon enough...please.

Also, I will be happy with a bowl game. We get better and better.

Yes, you would, because it serves your interests.

arky has a share of 64 like auburn has a share of 04 best i can tell

Not even a remotely relevant comparison.

and you're quickly making a name for yourself as the biggest idiot Arky fan here......which is quite the accomplishment. And you did it all in only 45 posts. kudos

I'll take that as a compliment from reading posts of your calibre.

Better watch out for Bamaboy, the guy with 26 imaginary titles in his sig. He's standard of measuring wit.

Anyone of any fanbase that doesn't consider Arkansas's 1964 FWAA football championship legit is a fool. OR if you do I hope you only consider your team the champion for a particular year if they won the AP without sharing it with a team that beat you or a BCS title.

Good points.

it really baffles me that people brag about winning football championships when it was 22 white guys averaging about 2oolbs each going at it.

I find it funny that those that like to bash people for bragging about it have one thing in common: They are fans of teams with very few(or zero) Championships from that era

Exactly. Who is to say the bowl games wouldn't have turned out differently had they counted towards a national title?

And lulz at the Arky fans who think most people care if they really won in 1964 anyway

If I had my choice I'd say give one to Arky and take away one from Bama. It would add some history to Arky and take one away from the bloated ego that is the Crimson Tide fanbase

But that didn't happen, bama won it in 1964 so my feelings on a championship before I was born matter not in the least
