Is the SEC weird?

Had some friend from the north at work that used to harass me, because the SEC fans there rooted for SEC teams when they played out of conference foes. One was an Oklahoma fan, and he said he would rather die than root for Texas to win a Natty. (This brought on by us pulling for Alabama to beat Notre Dame) This seems to be pretty prevelant among SEC fans.....I guess you would call it SEC pride?
I am Georgia first, SEC second...then I pull for anybody to beat Miami, Notre Dame, USCw and Ohio State. Do most on the board feel this way, or is it my imagination, and why do you think SEC fans are willing to pull for rivals in big games?

Screw Alabama and the rest of the sec.

SEC pride is a requirement because the SEC by large plays OOC cupcakes. It then becomes necessary for the argument that playing in the SEC is the toughest conference in the country.

I generally pull for SEC teams in OOC games, but there are some exceptions.

Some of us are weird. Some are dumb. Some are ugly. Some are incredibly handsome, like me. I'm also smart, and understand that if our conference kicks arse, it helps my team in the long run.

I used to have a lot of SEC loyalty, but lately my attitude has changed. I don't give a damn about the SEC or any team in it other than LSU.

People from other conferences that shite on SEC pride are just jelly.

There was a time where I'd root for SEC teams in OOC/bowl games. Since 2010,

It is almost impossible to find a situation that allows me to root for Tennessee.
I wanted auburn to beat Oregon (but I wouldn't have cried if they lost).
Anybody else and I can easily cheer on a SEC victory.

I root for my own seld interest. If the game promotes conference prestige, and thus the quality of my program, I'm all for it. There is a different dynamic for in state or close rivals however. For instance LSU could steal Houston area recruits (fortunately they weren't a top ten team last year, and A&M was top five, so they aren't that big of a threat). So there are definitely circumstances where LSU's gain is our loss. Mississippi State vs Oklahoma State, who is my favorite Big 12 team, definitely helps my team if the SEC is victorious.

This is hilarious. The top teams in the SEC play tough ooc opponents every year. Alabama has missed maybe 1 year playing one since saban has been here. LSU consistently plays one. Florida has a yearly game with Florida st. Georgia has a yearly game with ga tech an then usually schedules another tough one, this year with Clemson, who is widely picked to win the ACC this year and south Carolina plays the every year. Arkansas played a yearly game against aTm before they entered the SEC and now play the as an in conference game.
Try again hater.

I don't think it's weird at all. As members of a conference we should take pride in it. I'd rather be a competitive team in a strong conference than the easy favorite every year in a weak one.

I root for the SEC, but I won't root for uga or ut unless they are playing fsu or Miami. Then I just hope for a crap game.
The big 12 root for each other now. I see it all the time.

Simply untrue.

Yeah this is kind of dying through the generations. Unfortunately I blame a lot of the increase in hate on the internet, which empowers little people to act like idiots without consequences. My dad always pulled for the SEC regardless. I try but sometimes it's hard depending on the team!

Everyone - please read a recent article in Forbes magazine by Jason Belzer that outlines Mike Slive's approach to making the conference stronger. It will make you understand the conference pride issue.
