Is the Playoff ruining CFB or is it a symptom of a bigger problem?

I still love college football don't get me wrong but watching Bama vs Clemson almost every year is driving me insane. Since the playoff has been put in place, bowl games feel meaningless. I remember back 10 years ago when bowl season was good television.

Is the playoff ruining the sport, or is everyone fed up that only 6-8 programs are in the discussion every year? I think expanding to an 8 team playoff would fix some issues, but it wouldn't fix the root cause.

Any input here? It's something I've been thinking about the past 24 hours.

Ive a feeling that when Saban retires there will be some rule changes to keep this type of consistency from happening. Kinda like they did when Bear retired.

However the more teams you add to the playoff the more likely it will be a lot of the same teams.

The opt outs are the issue, but the only way to fix that is make bowl games meaningful. Which means maybe forget the conference championship games and go to a 16 game playoff instead.

16 bowl games become relevant, and less star players opt out. I would say eight, but that probably doesn't allow the G5 to participate in any meaningful way

I think recruiting is ruining the sport. The best players go to the same schools that they believe will give them the best shot of making the NFL. I don’t like the idea of putting restrictions on it, but maybe they should only allow something like 3 5*s per class, 7 4*s and so on. But even that has a lot of flaws. I don’t think it’s the playoff, it’s how you get players, but I don’t know how you fix the system.

I don't know what could be done to change the situation. Alabama, Clemson, et al. have the same number of scholarships as everyone else. You can't stop players from going to school where they want to go. There are programs that have the same or more money resources that don't do nearly as well so I'm not sure that limiting the amount of money that can be spent on facilities, recruiting etc. would do much.

this is what I'm thinking. The playoff would look something like this every year:

Bama
Clemson
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Florida/Georgia
Oregon/winner of Pac 12
A random G5 team

But people will have the same complaints.

The funny part is that the more you expand the playoff the more chances it ends up like this.

The only 2 teams get in system, basically means you could not make any mistakes.

Just a cycle we are in. They never last. Yankees were “ruining” baseball 15-20 years ago. CFP will be modified at some point. Truth is every P5 conference winner should be in. Non-P5 should have 1 or 2 spots reserved. Last spot at large for a deserving P5 non conference winner. Always going to be some bitching but every P5 conference should get a team in.

Respectfully, I reject the premise.

Clemson and Bama of today are not that different from other mini-dynasties. (“Mini” only referring to a 1-coach run, as opposed to true dynasties. Bama is one. Clemson is not.)

They really are the best programs. The “problem” is that they vacuum up so much of the top talent. This is one of the factors that helped Texas dominate the state for so long. Before scholly limits, they would sign as much talent as they could convince to come there, then put most of them on the shelf.

Unless you want to somehow restrict kids from going to these places, I don’t see a solution right now.

good points here. MLB got over the Yankee dynasty. I feel like every team has an equal shot right now. NBA is in a pretty bad cycle I'd say.

Now that players have started opting out of bowl games the only thing that will stop it is an expanded playoff. The bowl games have always sucked anyway imo.

CFB is a mess. UNC is playing in one of its biggest bowl games in forever and 3 of their best players have opted out.

At this point I want to see a return to the bowl and poll system. There is no method of determining an FBS college football champion that will ever satisfy people, so why even bother? Expanding the playoff isn't going to change the lineup of teams. It'll still be the same handful every year. The seeding will just be different.

No, the NCAA and ESPN trying to hold on to the popularity contest so they can select their favorites is ruining CFB. Though ruining is a strong word. CFB is good, but some playoff selection decisions are not good for the game.

Once they go to a more merit based system will be when CFB becomes great. Still think the conference champions plus some at large teams will be the way, but we’ll see how the NCAA will flub it up.

Playoff ruining it, as players now QUIT before seasons end, but it was super flawed before the playoff.

I don't get all the crying. The solution is for other teams to get better.

FSU, Miami, Va Tech need to compete. AU and LSU have both won but need to do so more consistently. Forida dominated this conference for a decade.

Expanding the playoff will just make it worse.

I may have overstated their importance, but they used to mean more than they do now. I never remember opt-outs being this bad.
