Is State Baseball equal to Ole Miss Football?

Their fans think so...

quote:

State is in baseball like we are in football. Tons of tradition; the "it" factor in the postseason, etc. Going to Omaha to them is like us going to the Sugar Bowl. They have some good football teams just like we have some good baseball teams. But they don't go to the Sugar and we don't go to Omaha.

What does tRant think about this comparison?

Both haven't won anything, so I'd have to say yeah..

I think Ole Miss fans are trying to give their football team more credit than they deserve.

4th and 25.

Our baseball program has finished in the top 8 in the country 10 times since 1971. Their football program hasn’t finished in the top 8 since 1969.

Being good in baseball isn't in the same galaxy as being good in football.

TIL two Sugar Bowl appearances in the past 50 years qualifies you as a Sugar Bowl mainstay.

Ive said this to State fans and got crazy looks but I believe it.

The Ole Miss fanbase is all in for football. They will support baseball and men's basketball at times, but when I say they are all in for football, I mean they are all in like Alabama is all in. Thus the win at all costs attitude. They have always been like that.

Whereas State is just the opposite. They'll support football, sure. But you need 2500 at a big softball game? Done. Sell out women's basketball multiple times? Yep. Have enough fan support in baseball to support a $55 million new stadium? Easy. It took an unreal run to No. 1 in the nation to get the fan support we have in football now. In 1998, we won the West with 5,000 empty seats in a stadium that held 42,000.

I didn't realize Ole Miss had been to the Sugar Bowl 5 times in the last 21 years.

Maybe both fanbases should focus more on men's tennis.

Miss State went to the elite 8 this year and are always top 20 year in and year out,

Ole Miss went to the sweet 16 and had an NCAA individual champion in 2009.

And those came after finishing 5th and 3rd in the SEC.

I've been saying this for 20 years. Even my own father gets mad at me about it

MSU fans don't understand how apathetic we are regarding football. MSU fans think that they care.

That is actually a perfect way to put it. There are some outliers, but as a fanbase, State fans generally are meh about football. Always have been. That's why in the 90s our athletic department could get away with selling SEC home games to Orlando.

That wouldn't happen today at MSU. But it wouldn't have happened at any other SEC school in the 90s.

As a fanbase - we resemble schools like Kentucky and Kansas a lot - except instead of basketball, State fans have latched on to baseball and lately women's basketball.

Ole Miss resembles Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia - football is first by a long shot. Football is king only on paper at MSU.
