At the college level, and what it takes to be successful there, yes! Maybe the best college coach ever.

I'm just sitting here waiting to hear the examples of great coaches if he's not one.

He's a good coach and a unbelievable recruiter. When talent has been even in his career he's been average. Unfortunately for everyone in the SEC the talent is never even anymore.

Of course not. He's completely terrible. Worst in the SEC.

2007 ... with players from mike shula's era, he takes bama to a 7-6 record ... no game was lost by more than 7 pts ... from 2002 to 2006, classes were 30th, 49th, 24th, 18th, 11th, and 10th ... the 2008 team went 12-0 in the regular season, largely with players from those classes ...

but you are right ... he can't coach ...

Sabans not stupid enough to think a bunch of "diamonds in the rough" are going to win championships, but then most fanbases are smart enough not to confuse a participation trophy w/ a championship.

The best way to answer the OP's question.

Do you want Nick Saban as the HC of your football team?

Wait, you are using 2007 to advocate for him? He went 6-6 and then won the Independence Bowl by 6 points. 4 of those wins were by 6 points or less and they lost to LA Monroe.

So with three top 18 classes on his roster he finished nowhere near the top 25.

Great players don't always equal success. Take the "tea sips" for example; they have the best in state talent in the country, arguably, and you've seen what happened to them. Recruiting is a large part of success but you have to know what to do with it to succeed

honestly trophies are great but not the sign of a great coach

wins

wins is the standard

if you have a coach that consistently wins he's a great coach - you need a lot of breaks to go your way to be in position to win a title and Saban has won enough games so that when the breaks happen the team is in a position to capitalize

the whole "can't win the big game" narrative is dumb

"big games" are essentially toss ups at a certain level and coming out on the right end of them has a lot to do with consistency and a lot to do with luck

this is why I think getting rid of Richt was a huge mistake

but I'm just some drunk in B-Ham

Three others have won National Titles at Bama. He is like the fourth person to walk on the moon. He is Alan Bean. :)

He's been pretty damn good at implimenting a process to develop the talent he brings in. He's also willing to adjust his schemes in an effort to evolve with the various trends of the game. He is not so egotistcal and stubborn that he can't see adjustments need to be made througout a season.

he's a fantastic X's and O's coach. anyone trying to argue otherwise doesn't know very much about X's and O's.

I would take him over Butch that's for sure.

I doubt if the pinkel bootlickers in como would want a coach to come in and show up their hero/goat "Gawy" though, it would be obscene to them to see how much Mizzou could actually win w/ a coach that knew what he was doing.

Butch will make him quit eventually when he starts having to play Tennessee twice on anannual basis.

His obsessive attention to detail and the demands he places on this coaching staff make him a great X/O's coach. He plans and prepares his staff and in return they prepare those players.

And all six of those losses were by 7 points or less. What's your point?

He took the best team in the SEC into OT that season and the eventual national champion down to the wire.

Butch has momentum going, he's stocking up talent. I'd love a showdown in ATL with y'all.
